WASHINGTON - President Donald J. Trump announced Friday that the United States, Denmark and Greenland have reached a sweeping new security agreement that his administration says will permanently secure American military access to Greenland and prevent U.S. adversaries from establishing a strategic foothold on the Arctic island.

Trump announced the agreement hours ago on Truth Social, declaring that it gives the United States “permanent control over security” in Greenland and saying the agreement will:

“Guarantee that the United States will FOREVER have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland in order to secure and defend the security of Greenland, and the United States of America.”

He also described the binding nature of the arrangement as an “Infinite Life” agreement with “no end.”

Denmark’s Prime Minister’s Office said officially that Greenland, Denmark and the United States are expected to sign the agreement next week at the United Nations General Assembly. Following signature, the agreement will enter into force subject to the necessary national parliamentary procedures.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, said:

”I am glad that we are about to make a great agreement for Greenland, the Kingdom of Denmark, and the United States. An agreement which strengthens our common security in the Arctic and the North Atlantic Area and therefore is great for NATO and Europe as well. And an agreement which at the same time recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom and the Greenlandic people’s right to self-determination.” 

Greenland Chairman of Naalakkersuisut Jens-Frederik Nielsen, said of the agreement:

“It is encouraging that we are about to make an agreement that will ensure and strengthen the security of Greenland, the Kingdom of Denmark, the United States, and the Western Alliance. The agreement recognizes Greenland’s interests and our place in the international cooperation. It is to the benefit of us all.”

As of yet, the complete agreement has not yet been publicly released, making its exact terms and provisions impossible for the USA Herald to independently examine.

However, the deal does appear to build upon an unusually deep American military relationship with Greenland that already dates back decades. The United States and Denmark entered the Defense of Greenland Agreement in 1951, later supplemented in 2004 with Greenland’s government participating. That framework supports the American presence now centered at Pituffik Space Base.

Trump says the new arrangement goes considerably further. According to the president, no American adversary will be permitted to establish a base, maintain a military presence or make sensitive investments in Greenland without U.S. approval. Secretary of State Marco Rubio likewise said Greenland would remain part of North America’s strategic defense area and that the agreement “permanently and completely addresses” U.S. national-security concerns.

Strategically, Greenland is exceptionally important. Pituffik’s 12th Space Warning Squadron already operates an upgraded early-warning radar supporting missile warning, missile defense and space-domain awareness. The system detects and assesses intercontinental and submarine-launched ballistic missile threats against the United States and Canada.

That geography could become still more important as Washington develops defenses against advanced ballistic and hypersonic threats. Greenland’s northern location makes it valuable for sensors, tracking systems, satellite communications and potentially future components of a broader missile-defense architecture.

Importantly, Trump says, “There will be NO COST to the United States!”

For the Trump administration, the agreement represents the successful culmination of months of negotiations over Greenland’s place in North American defense. For Americans, it’s an important national security achievement.
