AI Reshapes Software Engineering Jobs Without Eliminating Them

Concerns that artificial intelligence will eliminate software engineering jobs are overstated, according to industry leaders and academics, even as the technology rapidly reshapes how developers work.

At the University of Washington, computer science students returned from spring break to find reassurance in their inboxes. Magdalena Balazinska, who leads the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering, addressed mounting anxiety about AI’s impact on careers in a message sent to more than 2,000 undergraduates.

“I’m reaching out because I keep hearing concerns about AI and the future of (computer science) careers,” she wrote.

Her conclusion was clear: AI is not eroding employment prospects — it is broadening them.

The rise of tools such as Anthropic’s Claude and OpenAI’s Codex has accelerated software production, fueling fears that automation could replace developers. High-profile signals have added to the unease: Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff said his company halted engineering hires last year, and surveys suggest about half of Americans expect AI to shrink the number of software jobs. For many, software development is seen as a preview of how AI might affect other professions.

Yet labor market data tells a more nuanced story. Demand for developers is increasing as companies anticipate producing more software with AI assistance. As coding becomes more accessible, firms are seeking experienced engineers to guide, refine and scale these outputs.

Rather than eliminating roles, AI is redefining them. Developers are spending less time writing routine code and more time supervising AI-driven tools — often described as autonomous coding agents — while focusing on architecture, problem-solving and innovation.

“The job will look different. That doesn’t mean it’s going away,” said Amanda Richardson, CEO of CoderPad. “The best engineers are spending all day, every day with AI and using it to make their designs better.”

The shift, however, has created turbulence. Engineers who are slow to adopt AI or struggle to adapt may find themselves at a disadvantage during this transitional phase.

HIRING TRENDS REMAIN STRONG

Employment indicators suggest continued growth. Job postings for software engineers on Indeed have risen 11% year over year, outpacing overall listings, according to Citadel Securities. A Bank of America survey also found companies expanding software budgets and increasing engineering headcounts. Federal projections estimate software developer employment will grow 15% by 2034.

At the University of Washington, most computer science graduates are still securing full-time roles in the tech sector, Balazinska noted in her message.

Historically, industries undergoing technological disruption have often seen employment expand, said James Bessen of Boston University. Advances tend to lower costs and improve quality, driving higher demand and, in turn, more jobs.

He pointed to the textile industry, where automation in the 19th century dramatically reduced production costs and led to a surge in consumption. Employment grew significantly for decades as a result.

Companies adapting successfully to AI are pairing less-experienced workers skilled in the technology with seasoned professionals who understand industry needs, said Frank Nagle of MIT.

IBM, for instance, is expanding entry-level hiring in the United States, including for software development roles. With AI tools, junior engineers can now handle tasks that once required years of experience, said Neel Sundaresan, IBM’s general manager of automation and AI.

The nature of the job is evolving at the company. Developers are moving away from repetitive coding toward direct collaboration with customers and defining AI-driven solutions. “Because the role is changing, we need people who can grow into it,” Sundaresan said.

Intuit is following a similar approach, recruiting more early-career developers familiar with AI tools. Chief technology officer Alex Balazs said modern engineers are increasingly focused on complex design challenges and customer-focused solutions, rather than writing every line of code manually.

“They actually have the time to worry about those things because they don’t have to spend endless hours coding boilerplate, common things,” he said.

ADAPTING TO A NEW ERA

Despite positive long-term signals, uncertainty persists. Many recent graduates reported difficulty finding jobs last year, while major technology companies including Oracle, Amazon and Microsoft have cut tens of thousands of roles.

As businesses invest heavily in AI, they are also under pressure to reduce costs, leaving workers scrambling to keep pace with rapid change. Continuous learning and adaptability are becoming essential for standing out in a competitive market.

For industry leaders, the message to aspiring developers is consistent: embrace AI rather than resist it.

Customers and colleagues frequently ask whether software development remains a viable career path, Balazs said. His response emphasizes the growing importance of AI fluency among engineers.

Balazinska echoed that advice to her students.

“Roll-up your sleeves,” embrace the change and keep learning, she said, noting that many more technological breakthroughs lie ahead.

That constant evolution, she added, is precisely what makes the field “so fun to be in.”
