A terrifying accident unfolded during an Idaho Air Show on Sunday when two fighter jets collided midair before crashing near the runway at Mountain Home Air Force Base.

Despite the dramatic collision and fiery crash, all four crew members aboard the aircraft safely ejected and survived, according to reports from officials and eyewitnesses.

The aircraft were participating in the Gunfighters Air Show, a major aviation event held about 50 miles southeast of Boise, when the crash occurred during a performance flight.

Witnesses described seeing the two jets flying extremely close together moments before they collided in midair and became entangled. Video footage circulating online appeared to show sparks flying from the aircraft before they plunged toward the ground.

Coverage of the incident has appeared through KTVB News and Idaho Statesman.

Air Show Collision Creates Fireball In the Sky

Photos and videos from the scene showed a massive plume of black smoke rising above the air base after the jets slammed into the runway area.

Witnesses at the event said a loud explosion followed the impact, producing a fireball visible from across the airfield.

According to reports, the aircraft appeared to be Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet fighter jets, although officials had not immediately confirmed the aircraft types.

An announcer speaking to the crowd shortly after the collision reassured spectators that all four crew members successfully ejected before impact.

“We had four good parachutes. The crews were able to eject,” the announcer reportedly told attendees.

Emergency crews, including crash fire rescue teams and medical responders, rushed to the crash site moments after the accident.

Information about aviation safety investigations can be found through the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.

Mountain Home Base Locked Down After Air Show Crash

Organizers of the event, known as the Mountain Home Gunfighters, later confirmed through social media that the air base was temporarily placed on lockdown following the incident.

Authorities have not yet released details regarding what may have caused the collision.

The crash occurred during the second day of the air show, which had returned after a lengthy hiatus. Sunday’s event marked the first Gunfighters Air Show held at Mountain Home Air Force Base in eight years.

The event has previously experienced tragedy.

According to the Idaho Statesman, a hang glider pilot died during the 2018 show after an accident. In another incident during the 2003 air show, a pilot with the United States Air Force Thunderbirds demonstration team was forced to eject after his aircraft crashed.

Investigation Following Dramatic Midair Collision

Military officials and federal aviation investigators are expected to conduct a detailed review into the circumstances surrounding Sunday’s collision.

Air show performances involving military jets are carefully choreographed and require extensive coordination between pilots and event organizers. Experts say even minor miscalculations during close-formation flying can create extremely dangerous situations.

The survival of all four crew members was viewed as a remarkable outcome given the violent nature of the crash.

As emergency responders secured the scene Sunday evening, many spectators expressed relief that no fatalities were reported despite the catastrophic collision witnessed by thousands attending the event.
