By Samuel López | USA Herald - A disputed airport bag, alleged drugs and a staggering 15-year employment demand have ignited an international legal battle between Grammy-winning singer Alanis Morissette and her former tour manager.

Morissette filed a federal lawsuit against Keren Urinov on September 1 in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, accusing her former employee of orchestrating what the complaint describes as a “calculated blackmail campaign.”

The singer asserts claims for civil extortion, fraud and negligent misrepresentation. She is seeking compensatory damages exceeding $75,000, punitive damages and a jury trial. No court has determined that Urinov committed wrongdoing, and the allegations remain contested.

According to the federal complaint, Morissette temporarily hired Urinov to manage her 2025 tour.

On July 12, 2025, the touring party was preparing to fly from Farnborough Airport in the United Kingdom to Spain when British Border Force officials flagged a bag for inspection. Urinov allegedly identified herself as its owner.

Urinov later reportedly told Morissette’s team that authorities had arrested her and issued a seizure notice alleging the bag contained marijuana and xylazine, a non-opioid tranquilizer commonly used in veterinary medicine. The complaint says Urinov acknowledged that the bag and its contents belonged to her, presented an Israeli medical-marijuana license and was released.

When Urinov reentered the United Kingdom the following day, Border Force officers allegedly questioned her again. Morissette claims Urinov again told the team that she had accepted ownership of the bag and the alleged substances.

The dispute escalated after the tour ended.

Morissette alleges Urinov and her attorney began sending “increasingly extortionate letters” threatening legal action in Britain unless the singer told authorities that the alleged drugs were hers.

The complaint claims Morissette was offered another way to put an end to the dispute—hire Urinov as a full-time tour director for 15 years, pay her compensation comparable to that position, provide annual increases and bonuses, and retain an immigration attorney to obtain a U.S. work visa. Additional compensation was allegedly demanded if a visa could not be secured.

Morissette refused.

Her lawsuit also attacks Urinov’s professional performance, alleging that a hotel-booking mistake unnecessarily cost the singer nearly $70,000. Morissette further claims Urinov failed to disclose before being hired that she had previously been arrested in Ecuador for allegedly smuggling drugs in a surfboard and had fled after being released on bail.

Those alleged pre-employment representations form the basis of Morissette’s fraud and negligent-misrepresentation claims. The civil-extortion claim centers on the alleged threats to accuse Morissette of criminal conduct unless she provided employment and compensation.

Urinov’s attorney, Mark Lewis of Patron Law, forcefully rejected the accusations, telling Entertainment Weekly that his client “totally rejects any allegation of blackmail.”

Lewis said Urinov was attempting to clear her name—not secure a payoff—and maintained that evidence presented in court would reveal the truth about Morissette’s actions. He also said Urinov learned about the U.S. lawsuit through media inquiries and had not yet been served.

Urinov filed separate proceedings against Morissette in London’s King’s Bench Division 13 days before the singer commenced her federal action. The precise allegations underlying that claim have not been publicly detailed.

The competing cases now create a high-stakes, cross-border courtroom confrontation involving alleged threats, disputed communications and sharply conflicting versions of what followed the airport encounter. Until evidence is tested and factual findings are made, Morissette’s claims and Urinov’s denials remain allegations before the courts.
