America’s Deadliest New Drug: The “Super Opioid” 100 Times Stronger Than Fentanyl That Just Claimed Its First Victim In Northern California

Cychlorphine has arrived. It evades fentanyl test strips, may resist Narcan, and is now confirmed in San Francisco. This is the most dangerous drug law enforcement has ever confronted — and average Americans need to know the truth about it right now.

WHERE IT COMES FROM

What is happening right now with cychlorphine is not a future threat. It is a present emergency, and most Americans have no idea it exists. San Francisco health authorities have confirmed that this extraordinarily powerful synthetic opioid has already claimed its first Bay Area victim — detected in a counterfeit pill that an unsuspecting person put in their body, not knowing it contained one of the most lethal substances ever to hit the streets of this country.

The Drug Enforcement Administration first encountered this substance in 2024 at a lab in Florida. That was barely a year ago. Today, it is in San Francisco. Tomorrow — based on how the drug supply moves in America — it could be in your city.

The DEA has been explicit about how fast these substances travel: a pill can originate in one location and appear 30 hours later thousands of miles away via major interstate corridors like I-80, I-5, and Highway 99. These are not backroads. These are the highways that run through the heart of America.

"The first time DEA saw it was in 2024 at one of our labs down in Florida. A pill can show up in Chicago and, 30 hours later, it can be in San Francisco using the I-80, the 99, I-5. These are major corridors."

- BOB BERIS — SPECIAL AGENT IN CHARGE, DEA SAN FRANCISCO FIELD DIVISION -

WHO IS MAKING IT AND HOW

Cychlorphine belongs to a class of clandestinely engineered synthetic opioids — drugs deliberately engineered in illicit laboratories, primarily overseas, by criminal networks seeking to produce substances that are cheaper to manufacture, more potent than existing drugs, and — critically — chemically distinct enough to stay ahead of federal scheduling laws.

These are not accidental discoveries. They are calculated products of a global underground pharmaceutical industry that is racing to outmaneuver law enforcement at every turn.

The precursor chemicals used to synthesize drugs like cychlorphine are often sourced from unregulated markets in Asia, then processed and distributed by trafficking organizations with supply chains that rival legitimate pharmaceutical logistics in their sophistication.

By the time a drug like this reaches an American street corner or a counterfeit pill press, it has traveled through multiple countries, multiple handlers, and multiple layers of criminal infrastructure specifically designed to evade detection.

"This is not a street corner chemistry experiment. Cychlorphine is the product of a global criminal pharmaceutical industry — and it is deliberately engineered to be undetectable, unstoppable, and more lethal than anything that came before it."

WHAT LAW ENFORCEMENT IS UP AGAINST

The legal and law enforcement challenges posed by cychlorphine are unlike anything we have seen with prior opioid crises. First, detection is nearly impossible with current tools. Health officials have confirmed that standard fentanyl test strips — the frontline harm-reduction tool distributed to at-risk communities across the country — do not detect cychlorphine.

That means someone using a test strip in good faith to verify their drugs may receive a false negative and proceed to consume a substance that is orders of magnitude more deadly than they know.

Second, Narcan — the naloxone-based overdose reversal drug that has saved hundreds of thousands of lives during the fentanyl crisis — may be significantly less effective against cychlorphine, potentially requiring multiple doses in rapid succession.

That places an extraordinary and potentially impossible burden on first responders and community health workers who arrive at an overdose scene with limited supplies and limited time.

"It's not detected on the available fentanyl test strips. So, it's very important to really try to avoid counterfeit pills altogether."

- PHILIP COFFIN — DIRECTOR, CENTER ON SUBSTANCE USE AND HEALTH, SFDPH -

Third — and this is the dimension that keeps law enforcement officials and national security analysts up at night — cychlorphine's extreme potency makes it a potential tool for intentional harm.

When a substance is this lethal in microscopic quantities and this difficult to detect, the risk that it could be weaponized by bad actors — whether individual criminals, organized crime networks, or even hostile state-sponsored actors — becomes a serious public safety and national security concern that cannot be dismissed or minimized.

Cychlorphine is not arriving in isolation. Officials in New York City have simultaneously identified carfentanil — a sedative so powerful it is used to tranquilize elephants, and one of the most toxic substances known to exist — circulating in the city's drug supply for the first time. Alongside it, medetomidine, an animal tranquilizer described by experts as even more potent than xylazine — the so-called "zombie drug" that has already ravaged cities like Philadelphia — has been detected as well.

We are witnessing the systematic contamination of the illicit drug supply with substances that belong in veterinary clinics and chemical laboratories — not in the bloodstreams of human beings. The opioid crisis, which we thought we understood, has entered a new and far more dangerous phase. The margin for error has been eliminated.

CRITICAL PUBLIC SAFETY WARNING

Do not take any pill that was not prescribed to you directly by a licensed physician and dispensed by a licensed pharmacy. There is no exception to this rule that is worth your life. Counterfeit pills are indistinguishable from legitimate medications to the naked eye — and they are killing people.

Standard fentanyl test strips will not detect cychlorphine. If you or someone you know uses drugs, carrying multiple doses of Narcan is essential — a single dose may not be enough. Call 911 immediately in the event of any suspected overdose. Do not wait to see if the person recovers.

In public settings — concerts, festivals, parties, nightlife — never accept pills, powders, or any substance from someone you do not know. Cychlorphine can be mixed into cocaine, pressed into counterfeit pills, or sold as a powder. It has no smell. No color. No warning label. It can kill before you even realize anything is wrong.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Community organizations like Code Tenderloin in San Francisco are already on the front lines, doubling the amount of Narcan distributed each night and working to educate communities about what they are facing. But community organizations cannot do this alone.

The federal government must act urgently to schedule cychlorphine, fund advanced detection technology, and ensure that updated overdose reversal protocols reach every first responder, emergency department, and harm-reduction worker in the country.

In the meantime, the most powerful thing ordinary Americans can do is stay informed and stay vigilant. Share this report. Talk to your family. Talk to your kids. The illicit drug supply in this country is more unpredictable and more deadly than it has ever been, and the people most at risk are often the ones who have no idea what they are actually consuming.
