An hour. That's how long a Maumelle High School football player wore his helmet before realizing something was already living inside it.

Animal services in Maumelle, Arkansas, received a call last Thursday from the high school reporting that a snake had been discovered curled up inside a player's football helmet, according to Chris Davis, director of animal services for Maumelle. Amy Eoff, the department's lead animal control officer, told ABC News the player had been wearing the helmet for a full hour on the field before he noticed the animal tucked inside.

A Case of Mistaken Identity

The snake's species wasn't immediately clear. According to Eoff, the reptile was first identified as a copperhead — until animal services actually examined the specimen on site and realized it was something more dangerous: a cottonmouth, a venomous snake found throughout the Deep South and, in some cases, as far north as southern Missouri and Virginia.

Davis said two officers responded to the scene and confirmed the snake was genuinely lodged inside the helmet's padding, not simply resting near it — a detail that turned a strange discovery into a more complicated extraction than anyone anticipated.

An Unconventional Rescue

Getting the snake out proved harder than expected. Once the helmet — snake still inside — arrived at the shelter, Davis said the team's usual tools weren't going to work for this particular situation.

Their solution was more improvised than technical: officers placed the entire helmet inside a container and submerged it in water, banking on the fact that the snake would eventually need to surface for air. According to both Eoff and Davis, that's exactly what happened — the cottonmouth eventually emerged from the helmet on its own, at which point the team was able to safely remove it.

The snake survived the ordeal and was released back into the wild elsewhere, according to Eoff.

A Reminder for Anyone Leaving Gear Outside

For Eoff, the incident doubles as a practical warning heading into the rest of the season. She said people should be cautious about leaving anything outdoors, noting that snakes are opportunistic when it comes to finding a place to curl up — helmets included.

She also pushed back on the instinct to assume the worst about the animal's intentions, explaining that most snakes aren't actively trying to harm anyone, even if their defensive reaction can look fierce. According to Eoff, a snake that snaps when someone reaches toward it is typically acting out of fear rather than aggression — a startled animal defending itself, not hunting for a target.

For now, the story leaves behind a simple but unsettling lesson for football programs across snake country: check the equipment before you put it on, because sometimes something's already gotten there first.
