Arizona Candidate Alleges Rape While Repairing Campaign Sign

candidate alleges rape

Candidate alleges rape after she says she was attacked while trying to repair a damaged campaign sign in an Arizona parking lot. Bernadette Greene-Placentia, the Democratic nominee for Arizona’s 8th Congressional District, says she was knocked unconscious during the early-morning attack on Aug. 14 and later awoke to find a man sexually assaulting her.

The allegations have drawn attention because Greene-Placentia is running for Congress while also publicly describing an experience she says left her struggling with fragmented memories, embarrassment and anger. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that a report was filed on Aug. 31 and said the investigation remains ongoing.

Greene-Placentia Describes the Attack

According to Greene-Placentia’s account to the Phoenix New Times, she went out during the night to repair a campaign sign because Arizona’s daytime heat made such work difficult. She said she was in a Sun City parking lot when she was struck and lost consciousness.

She told the outlet that she regained consciousness during the alleged sexual assault. Greene-Placentia also said a second man approached and attempted to participate in the assault, but she kicked at him and he eventually walked away.

The candidate has said she remembers only fragments of what happened after being knocked unconscious. She also reportedly suffered bruising and believes she may have sustained a concussion.

Because she was wearing a campaign shirt, Greene-Placentia said she wondered whether the attacker recognized her political affiliation. However, she has not established that the alleged assault was politically motivated.

Police Investigation Remains Open

Greene-Placentia did not immediately report the alleged attack. According to the supplied account, she told her husband and campaign staff about what happened two days later, but waited approximately two additional weeks before contacting authorities.

She has said embarrassment and a desire to forget the incident contributed to the delay.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office confirmed that her report was filed Aug. 31 but declined to release additional details because of the ongoing investigation. No alleged attacker has been publicly identified or charged in connection with the reported assault based on the information available for this article.

Candidate Says She Wanted to Speak for Other Survivors

Greene-Placentia eventually decided to publicly discuss the alleged attack, saying she wants other victims of sexual violence to know they do not have to remain silent.

She described having periods of crying and anger following the incident and said she hoped speaking about her experience would encourage other women to discuss their own experiences.

Her campaign describes Greene-Placentia as a mother, former long-haul trucker and small-business owner. Her campaign website says she has logged more than four million miles as a truck driver and is running as a Democrat for Arizona's 8th Congressional District.

She is challenging Republican incumbent Abraham Hamadeh.

The allegation remains an active law-enforcement matter, and Greene-Placentia's account should be understood as an allegation rather than a finding of criminal guilt against any unidentified suspect.
