Arizona Man Accused of Crucifying Pastor Pushes Judge For A Quick Death Sentence

By Samuel A. Lopez | USA Herald - An Arizona courtroom is now the center of a deeply disturbing case that has shocked a quiet community and raised profound legal questions about justice, accountability, and the proper handling of one of the most grotesque murders in recent memory.

Adam Sheafe, 51, stands accused of murdering Pastor William “Bill” Schonemann in April 2025 in New River, Arizona, an unincorporated community located roughly 40 miles north of Phoenix. Prosecutors say the crime was not only deliberate but carried out in a manner intended to mock one of Christianity’s most sacred symbols.

According to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, concerned members of Schonemann’s congregation went to check on the pastor at his home on April 28, 2025. What they discovered inside was a scene investigators later described as deeply disturbing. Authorities say the victim’s body had been positioned with arms outstretched in a manner resembling a crucifixion.

Prosecutors allege that Sheafe nailed the pastor’s body to the wall and placed a crown of thorns on his head after killing him.

The accused has not denied the killing. In fact, he has openly admitted to the crime. Sheafe was indicted in July 2025 on a sweeping list of charges that includes first-degree murder, three counts of attempted first-degree murder, kidnapping, burglary, criminal trespass, and theft of means of transportation.

Investigators say that after the killing, Sheafe stole the pastor’s pickup truck and fled the scene. His escape did not last long.

Authorities apprehended him the following day in Sedona while he was allegedly attempting to break into another home. Law enforcement officers reportedly recovered items taken from the pastor’s residence inside Sheafe’s backpack, linking him directly to the crime.

But what has now stunned observers is not simply the brutality of the killing, but the defendant’s behavior in court. During a hearing in Maricopa County Superior Court on March 12, Sheafe addressed the judge directly and asked to be sentenced to death as quickly as possible.

“We’re dragging this out in the interest of justice,” Sheafe told the court, according to reporting from KPNX, which was present during the hearing.

He argued that closure should come quickly for both the victim’s family and his own.

“What about the victim’s families? What about me? What about my family?” Sheafe said in court. “We want closure so we can move on with our lives.”

The defendant attempted to plead guilty during the hearing in hopes that the court would immediately impose the death penalty. But the judge declined to accept the plea.

Instead, the court questioned whether the request was genuine and whether the defendant might be acting under coercion or other pressures. Under Arizona law, courts must ensure that any guilty plea in a capital case is voluntary, informed, and not the product of outside influence.

Capital punishment cases also involve extensive procedural safeguards designed to ensure that a death sentence is legally justified. Even when a defendant openly admits guilt, courts typically require a full review of aggravating and mitigating factors before allowing the case to move forward toward sentencing.

Those legal safeguards exist for a reason.

Death penalty cases carry the highest stakes in the American justice system. Courts must ensure that the process is transparent, that evidence is fully presented, and that the historical record accurately reflects what occurred.

In this case, prosecutors have also revealed another chilling detail.

Authorities say Sheafe claimed the killing was part of a broader plan to target Christian leaders across the United States.

According to court documents referenced by investigators, the alleged plot involved plans to kill as many as 14 Christian leaders. Whether that claim reflects a genuine ideological motive or something else remains part of the ongoing investigation.

For the New River community, the loss of Pastor Schonemann has left a deep emotional scar.

Friends and neighbors described him as a kind and dedicated pastor who served his congregation faithfully in a quiet rural area north of Phoenix. His death has shaken a community that knew him as a peaceful spiritual leader.

While the brutality of the crime has understandably sparked outrage and grief, the legal process now unfolding will determine how justice is ultimately carried out. The judge has not yet ruled on Sheafe’s request for a death sentence, and it remains unclear when such a decision might be made.

Sheafe is expected to return to court next month, when the judge may decide whether the case proceeds to trial or moves into the next stage of the legal process.

For now, the court appears determined to move deliberately rather than quickly.

And in a case as disturbing as this one, that deliberate process may ultimately be necessary to ensure that the full truth is documented and that justice is delivered not according to the wishes of the accused, but according to the rule of law.
