A Historic Journey Comes Full Circle

On Friday (April 10), the crew of NASA’s Artemis 2 mission completed a 10-day journey around the moon, marking the first crewed lunar mission since the Apollo era ended in 1972. It was a milestone packed with risk, precision, and global attention.

Strapped into the Orion capsule, the astronauts began their return with one of the most dangerous phases of any space mission—reentry. The spacecraft tore through the atmosphere at over 24,000 miles per hour (38,000 kilometers per hour), enduring searing temperatures reaching 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit (2,760 degrees Celsius).

"What Is It?"

After splashdown in the Pacific Ocean, the crew’s ordeal wasn’t over. They rocked in the ocean inside the capsule, awaiting extraction. One by one, the astronauts were transferred into a small boat, then hoisted by helicopter onto a U.S. Navy recovery ship.

The four-member crew—NASA’s Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with the Canadian Space Agency’s Jeremy Hansen—finally stepped onto stable ground, greeted by mission teams and personnel.

In a powerful image captured shortly after landing, Glover gives a thumbs-up while Koch waves to the camera. Both are visibly beaming, soaking in a moment years in the making.

"Why Is It Incredible?"

NASA’s Artemis 2 mission is incredible for a multitude of reasons scientific, technical, and historical. But beyond the data and milestones, this mission delivered something deeply human.
