During that phase, the crew reached a staggering distance of 252,756 miles (406,771 kilometers) from Earth—the farthest humans have ever traveled—before beginning their journey home.

As the spacecraft emerged from behind the Moon, the astronauts were greeted by a breathtaking phenomenon: a total solar eclipse, with the Moon perfectly blocking the Sun from their vantage point.
