AT&T $177M Settlement Could Send Payments to Millions of Customers

at&t 177m settlement

For millions of AT&T customers, years of uncertainty over stolen personal information could soon translate into a settlement payment.

The at&t 177m settlement follows two lawsuits filed after the telecommunications giant confirmed data breaches in 2019 and 2022. Together, the incidents exposed information tied to tens of millions of current and former customers, creating a legal storm that ultimately produced a $177 million settlement.

The first breach involved personal information belonging to about 7.6 million current AT&T account holders and 65.4 million former customers. The information was discovered in a dataset posted on the "dark web."

The second breach was broader still. Data involving nearly all of AT&T's customers was reportedly downloaded to a third-party platform.

Those two security incidents now sit at the center of the settlement, which established two separate funds: one worth $149 million and another containing $28 million.

AT&T previously denied the allegations in a statement but said it agreed to the settlement to avoid the expense and uncertainty of prolonged litigation.

A court granted final approval to the agreement last week, according to an update posted by settlement administrators. With that approval in place, eligible class members could soon begin receiving payments, with some claims potentially worth as much as $7,500.

How Much Could AT&T Settlement Claimants Receive?

The amount depends largely on which breach affected a claimant and whether the person could document financial losses.

However, there was one crucial requirement: Claims had to be submitted by the Dec. 18, 2025, deadline.

Court records show that more than 4.9 million claims were filed. Nearly 1.1 million were rejected for reasons including being late, duplicative, fraudulent, released, withdrawn or submitted by an ineligible business.

That left more than 3 million approved claims.

Up to $7,500 Available for Documented Losses

Approved claimants who provided "proper proof" of documented losses that were "fairly traceable" to the data breach could qualify for payments of up to $7,500, according to court documents.

But the settlement does not send every claimant a five-figure-sized check. For many customers, compensation is determined through a tiered system.

Customers whose Social Security numbers were exposed in the 2019 breach could seek a Tier 1 payment.

Those whose other personal information was exposed, but whose Social Security numbers were not included, could seek Tier 2 compensation.

A third category was created for people affected by the second breach. Tier 3 payments are distributed on a pro rata basis, meaning eligible claimants receive an equal share of whatever remains in the applicable settlement fund after other payments are made.

People affected by both breaches could qualify for multiple applicable tiers under the settlement.

Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 Payments

Court documents provide estimates for what approved claims in each tier are expected to receive.

More than 1.6 million Tier 1 claims were approved. Customers whose Social Security numbers were affected by the 2019 breach are expected to receive between $39 and $40.

Tier 2 payments are projected to fall between $7.50 and $8.10. More than 680,000 Tier 2 claims were approved.

For Tier 3 claimants, estimated payments range from $6.50 to $7.10. More than 1.5 million claims were approved in that category.

The difference between the potential $7,500 maximum and the relatively small tier payments underscores how dramatically compensation can vary depending on documented losses and the type of information involved.

When Will AT&T Settlement Payments Arrive?

The timing now depends on whether additional objections are raised against the court's order.

The order, filed Oct. 2, already addressed several objections. It also sets a deadline for distributing settlement payments: Funds are to be sent within 60 days after the order's effective date.

For approved claimants, that means the final legal steps are now standing between them and the money.

After years in which sensitive information could be only a few clicks away from the wrong hands, the at&t 177m settlement is entering its final phase — turning a massive data-security dispute into payments for millions of people who successfully navigated the claims process.

The estimated tier payments tell a very different story from the $7,500 maximum. Those smaller amounts deserve more attention in the headline.
