A dramatic security breach at a high-profile Washington gala has triggered a sweeping federal investigation after prosecutors say a California man attempted to assassinate President Donald Trump while heavily armed and storming a secured event. The incident, which unfolded at the Washington Hilton during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday night, has raised urgent questions about presidential security and venue protocols.

Violent Breach at High-Profile Political Event Sparks Panic

Authorities say the situation escalated rapidly when 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen allegedly forced his way past a security checkpoint while carrying a semi-automatic handgun, a pump-action shotgun and three knives. The breach set off immediate alarms inside one of the most closely watched political gatherings in the capital.

Trump, Vice-President JD Vance, cabinet members and other White House officials were rushed out of the Washington Hilton ballroom after gunfire erupted inside the hotel complex.

A Secret Service agent was shot during the chaos but survived, according to officials.

Suspect Faces Attempted Assassination Charge

Allen was formally charged in Washington DC on Monday with attempted assassination of the president along with two firearms-related offences. He did not enter a plea.

He appeared in court wearing a blue jumpsuit with a nametag, speaking softly and responding to the judge almost entirely with, "yes, your honour" or "no, your honour."

He confirmed his age and stated he had a master's degree while three US marshals stood behind him and another remained at his side. Federal prosecutor Jeanine Pirro was present in court.

If convicted of attempted assassination, Allen faces a potential life sentence.

“One Secret Service officer was shot in the chest, but was wearing a ballistic vest that worked,” Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche told a news conference on Monday.

“This heroic officer who was hit fired five times at Allen, who was not shot but fell to the ground and was promptly arrested.”

Officials said the agent was later released from hospital.

Authorities also believe Allen discharged his shotgun at least once during the attack. Investigators have not yet confirmed whether the injured officer was struck by the suspect or caught in crossfire.

Investigation Reveals Cross-State Travel and Planning

Court proceedings revealed Allen allegedly crossed multiple state lines before the attack. Prosecutors say he left Torrance in the Los Angeles area on 21 April, traveled by train to Chicago, then departed on 24 April for Washington, where he checked into the Hilton ahead of the event.

The suspect studied at the California Institute of Technology and reportedly worshipped at the Pasadena United Reformed Church.

Federal records also show he donated $25 to a Democratic Party political action committee supporting Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential race.

Email Raises Alarm Over Alleged Target List

According to an affidavit, Allen sent an email to his family shortly before the attack that read, "Administration officials... are targets, prioritized from highest-ranking to lowest".

"I would still go through most everyone here to get to the targets if it were absolutely necessary," he allegedly added.

Investigators say Allen has not been cooperating with law enforcement.

Security Under Scrutiny After Second Attack Attempt

The attempted assassination has triggered renewed scrutiny of security procedures at major political events, including questions about perimeter strength, ID verification and the concentration of top officials in one location.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche defended the response.

He noted the suspect was one floor away from the event space, "with hundreds of federal agents between him and the President of the United States".

The Washington Hilton, which was also the site of John Hinckley Jr’s 1981 assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan, said it followed Secret Service instructions.

A senior White House official said Trump was "standing by" the Secret Service leadership.

White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles is expected to lead a review meeting this week focused on protocols for major national events.

Trump has also assured that King Charles III will "be very safe" during his four-day state visit to the United States, which began Monday at the White House.
