The fallout is escalating fast. Days after a late-night joke ignited outrage inside the White House, a real-life act of violence has turned a comedy clash into a national flashpoint.

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel is pushing back hard against criticism from Melania Trump and President Donald Trump, rejecting claims that his joke about the first lady crossed into dangerous territory.

Kimmel had referred to Melania Trump as an "expectant widow" during a sketch aired last Thursday, a line he now insists was harmless.

The backlash was immediate.

Melania Trump called the joke "hateful and violent", while the White House went further, urging ABC to fire the comedian outright.

A gunman opened fire near the White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington, where Donald and Melania Trump were in attendance.

Authorities say the attacker may have been targeting members of the Trump administration.

The incident sent shockwaves through political and media circles, intensifying scrutiny on Kimmel’s remarks as critics linked rhetoric to real-world consequences.

"Kimmel Responds: ‘Not a Call to Assassination’"

In his first monologue on Jimmy Kimmel Live! after the shooting, Kimmel directly addressed the controversy.

"It was a very light roast joke about the fact that he's [President Trump] almost 80 and she's younger than I am", he said.

He forcefully rejected the idea that his words encouraged violence.

"It was not by any stretch of the definition a call to assassination and they know that, I've been very vocal for many years speaking out against gun violence in particular", he added.

Kimmel also turned the criticism back toward the White House.

"I agree that hateful and violent rhetoric is something we should reject, I think a great place to start to dial that back is having a conversation with your husband about it."

"Melania and Trump Demand Consequences"

Melania Trump did not hold back.

In a post on X, she wrote: "people like Kimmel shouldn't have the opportunity to enter our homes each evening to spread hate".

She continued with a sharper warning.

"His monologue about my family isn't comedy - his words are corrosive and deepens the political sickness within America... How many times will ABC's leadership enable Kimmel's atrocious behavior at the expense of our community."

President Trump echoed the outrage, claiming the remarks amounted to incitement.

"[T]his is something far beyond the pale. Jimmy Kimmel should be immediately fired by Disney and ABC", he wrote on Truth Social, adding he was grateful many Americans were "incensed by Kimmel's" comments.

"A Pattern of Controversy"

This is not the first time Kimmel has faced backlash tied to political violence.

Last September, he was briefly taken off air after comments about the shooting of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk.

At the time, Kimmel accused the "Maga gang" of trying to "score political points" from Kirk’s murder.

He returned a week later, acknowledging criticism.

"I get why you're upset", he said, admitting his remarks may have been "ill-timed or unclear or maybe both."

After the latest incident, the clip of Kimmel’s Thursday joke resurfaced online, fueling a surge of anger.

Critics accused him of encouraging political violence, with several conservative voices demanding he be taken off air.

The suspect, 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, was tackled by agents near a staircase leading to a packed ballroom filled with journalists, officials and public figures.

On Monday, Allen appeared in court.

He was charged with attempting to assassinate the president, along with multiple weapon-related offences. He did not enter a plea.
