Avi Loeb, Trump’s Handpicked UFO Chief, Traded Alien Hunting for Golf Math — Is This Really Who’s Running Point on Disclosure?

Inside This Report

  • Avi Loeb once petitioned the United Nations to establish a global protocol for first contact with extraterrestrial life.
  • Since taking over Trump's new UAP Science Advisory Council, his once-dense scientific essays have shifted toward lighthearted, tongue-in-cheek subject matter.
  • Critics say the shift raises fresh questions about whether the government picked the right man to lead a serious national security inquiry.

There was a time when Avi Loeb wanted the world to take him very, very seriously.

The Harvard astrophysicist once sent a formal letter to the United Nations, effectively nominating himself as humanity's designated spokesperson in the event we were ever contacted by an extraterrestrial — or even extra-dimensional — intelligence. He argued that nations needed to agree, in advance, on a unified protocol for how Earth would respond to such an encounter. It was a bold, almost audacious request. But it fit the man: a scientist who has spent years insisting that alien technology may already be parked in our own solar system.

That reputation reached a fever pitch during the recent flyby of 3I/ATLAS, the interstellar object that sent Loeb into overdrive on his Medium page. Post after post rolled out — dense, technical, occasionally eyebrow-raising theories, including the idea that the object could be "seeding" life across the galaxy. Whether or not readers bought the science, nobody could accuse him of not taking the subject seriously.

Then came the government job.

Loeb was tapped by the Trump administration to head the newly formed UAP Science Advisory Council, a panel created to help make sense of the mounting stack of unidentified anomalous phenomena reports flowing out of the Pentagon. It's a position with real stakes: the council has already requested more than fifty videos and documents tied to UAP incidents, and Loeb has promised the public a website to track the team's findings. In interviews, he's described the work as a kind of national security detective story.

But something curious has happened to his writing since he took the job.

Where his Medium output once wrestled with astrophysics at the edge of human understanding, the tone lately reads more like a science-themed improv exercise. Consider the headlines he's published in just the last month or two:

"How Many Golf Shots Does It Take to Get a Ball Into the Black Hole at the Center of the Milky Way?"

"What Distinguishes a Baseball Pitch from a UAP?"

"How to Propel Astronauts to the Speed of Light at 1g?"

"President Trump: Are There Alien Packages in Our Mailbox?"

Read that last one again. This is the man now entrusted with sorting fact from fiction in classified Pentagon footage.

To be fair, Loeb has never lacked a sense of humor about his own work — he's previously joked that his critics simply "lack the imagination" to keep up with him. And playful thought experiments are nothing new in physics; plenty of serious scientists use whimsical framing to make hard concepts digestible. A golf-ball-into-a-black-hole calculation, taken on its own, is just orbital mechanics dressed up for clicks.

But taken together, and set against the backdrop of a man who once tried to get the United Nations to formalize first-contact diplomacy, the recent run of essays lands differently. Not one of them offers anything resembling new information about the actual UAP phenomena his council was created to investigate. Zero disclosure. Zero new data. Just hypotheticals.

That contrast is fueling a question that's becoming harder to avoid: is this the same rigorous mind who once petitioned world governments to prepare for contact with the unknown — or has the job of leading a real federal UAP inquiry pulled Loeb toward performance over substance?

Supporters would argue the council's real work happens behind closed doors, and that Loeb's public writing has never been the full picture of his research. Skeptics — including some inside the scientific community who questioned his appointment from day one — see it as more evidence that his approach favors headlines over hard answers.

Either way, the public is left watching a scientist known for grand, sweeping theories now spending his public platform on baseball pitches and mailbox packages, while the actual UAP files sit, still largely unexplained, somewhere in a Pentagon server.
