Believer Meats files for bankruptcy

Believer Meats files for bankruptcy, drawing the curtain on what was once billed as a breakthrough venture poised to redefine how meat reaches dinner plates. The cultured-meat company, formerly known as Future Meat, entered insolvency proceedings Thursday in the Lod District Court after failing to secure financing to service its debts and operate a massive factory built in North Carolina.

The move follows earlier reporting by Calcalist that the company had already halted operations.

Mounting Debts and a Factory That Never Switched On

Court filings show Believer Meats carries debts of about 34.7 million shekels (roughly $11 million). Trouble accelerated after the company failed to complete payments to the contractor that built its first-of-its-kind U.S. factory designed for mass production of cultured meat. The contractor turned to a U.S. court, securing a receivership order over the facility.

Losses snowballed, investor confidence evaporated, and the venture founded by Prof. Yaakov Nachmia of the Hebrew University now stands at the brink, with about $390 million in accumulated investment effectively erased.

“The company’s assets do not have the capacity to repay its obligations,” Believer Meats said in its filing.

From Industry Leader to Insolvency

Believer Meats was once regarded as a global frontrunner in the cultured-meat race. But the wider industry has struggled to translate lab success into market-ready products, even as investors pulled back sharply.

After its U.S. subsidiary ceased operations, the Israeli parent was also forced to shut down its laboratory activities, underscoring how rapidly the situation deteriorated.

Sources close to the company had suggested earlier this month that rescue paths might still exist, whether through new investors or real-estate solutions. Those hopes faded as the company’s finances worsened, pushing it into formal insolvency proceedings.

A Cascade of Setbacks

In its insolvency application, Believer Meats said it faced “a serious economic crisis from which it has not been able to escape,” despite repeated attempts to stabilize the business.

The company cited multiple causes:

  • Prolonged and more expensive construction of the U.S. factory

  • Lengthy regulatory approval delays

  • The impact of Israel’s Swords of Iron war, during which many employees were called up for reserve duty

  • Disruptions tied to the Houthi naval blockade in the Red Sea

Believer Meats also acknowledged acute difficulty raising capital amid a broader downturn in foodtech investment, compounded by its identity as an Israeli company. According to the filing, geopolitical tensions led some investors to avoid Israel altogether.

Legal Action Seals the Fate

The final blow, the company said, came from recent legal action in the United States against its American subsidiary. That proceeding sought the appointment of a receiver over the factory and all assets, along with approval of a $35.2 million foreclosure claim, after Believer Meats failed to meet its obligations.

Attempts to raise capital, including approaches to banks and other financial institutions, proved unsuccessful. The net debt of the U.S. subsidiary to the parent company totals 672.4 million shekels ($211 million), according to the filing.

Costs Outpaced Reality

Company documents show construction of the North Carolina factory alone cost about $154 million, excluding equipment and machinery — far above the original $138 million budget. Construction was completed only in September, and the facility remains not ready for production.

All of this unfolded alongside what the company described as a “significant cash burn rate,” driven by high operating costs and heavy investment before any revenue was generated or products sold.

For Believer Meats, the promise of lab-grown protein collided with financial gravity — and the result is a bankruptcy filing that signals just how steep the climb remains for the cultured-meat industry.
