Blind Spots at the Boundary: Why Avi Loeb’s Narrow Lens Misses the True Reality of the Orb Phenomenon

Key Takeaways

  1. Flawed Data Baseline: Avi Loeb's analysis relies on a narrow subset of official military releases, mischaracterizing the true physical properties and visual profiles of the orb phenomena.
  2. The Witness Disconnect: By dismissing first-person civilian encounters and legal-grade forensic video evidence, current academic models fail to capture the living light behaviors of these objects.
  3. Scope Creep vs. Expertise: A rigorous defense analysis requires integrating sensor data with field investigations rather than relying solely on low-resolution government tranches.

Avi Loeb’s latest Medium postAre UAP Orbs Adversary Drones?- raises a legitimate national-security question: what, precisely, was seen during the U.S. military’s reported 2021 Gulf of Oman encounter?

But the question is larger than Loeb’s presentation allows.

The 5th Tranche of newly released PURSUE materials describe reported “cold orbs,” approximately four feet in diameter, observed by a U.S. Special Operations Forces AC-130J gunship. The accompanying record describes roughly 25 UAP observations during the sortie, including objects said to move in coordinated formations and, according to the report, to react after the aircraft used its weaponry.

Loeb is correct to say the Gulf of Oman report places the objects at roughly the one-meter scale. More precisely, the released description says, “approximately four feet in diameter”—about 1.2 meters, but this is an estimated size drawn from a single military report—not an established, universal measurement for objects described as “orbs,” which eyewitnesses more often characterize in terms of light rather than a metallic or reflective structure.

Loeb characterizes the orbs seen over the Gulf of Oman, as uniform objects roughly one meter in diameter and exhibiting cold thermal signatures. Loeb defers to reports describing the orbs in terms that span black, white, and unspecified metallic/reflective appearances.

While these metrics align with select low-resolution clips released in the recent government data releases, they fail to account for the comprehensive body of observational data long established in the field.

Loeb’s report ignores the primary characteristic observed by field investigators: these objects frequently manifest as dynamic light phenomena. Witnesses consistently report self-luminous, bright white, fire-orange, or multi-colored spheres of light capable of instant chromatic shifts mid-flight. During an investigative deployment to Monterey, California, in July 2026, USA Herald documented footage capturing low-altitude orb activity interacting alongside high-velocity visual anomalies operating above the cloud layer. The object's movement patterns—traversing near ground level, reacting dynamically to localized environmental shifts, and altering trajectory in a manner akin to an organic entity—defy the rigid, mechanical classification of standard metallic reconnaissance drones.

Academic efforts that rely exclusively on government-released sensor tranches risk endless delay while attempting to analyze deliberately degraded media. Sensor artifacts, thermal inversion limits, and narrow field-of-view cameras tell only part of the story. By ignoring direct eyewitness testimony, field investigations, and legal forensic verification of civilian media, current academic commentary limits its own scope. Evaluating national security threats and genuine physical anomalies demands an integrated methodology—one that combines military radar telemetry with rigorous, legally vetted field research. Until researchers expand their aperture beyond official feeds, the true nature of the orb phenomenon will remain hidden behind the lens.
