Biden Names Florida and SC Judicial Nominees

President Biden Nominates Five District Judge Candidates, Defying Political Odds

WASHINGTON (AP) — In a move that defies political conventions, President Joe Biden has unveiled a lineup of five district judge nominees for the states of Florida and South Carolina. These states are known for their Republican senators, making this announcement all the more captivating.

The Nominees: A Diverse Selection

The distinguished nominees include Magistrate Judge Jacquelyn D. Austin, who is set to represent the District of South Carolina. Magistrate Judge Jacqueline Becerra and Magistrate Judge Melissa Damian will serve the Southern District of Florida. David S. Leibowitz, corporate counsel for Braman Management Association, will become a district judge for the Southern District of Florida. Finally, Magistrate Judge Julie S. Sneed will serve the Middle District of Florida.

A Diverse Array of Experience

Judge Austin has been serving the District of South Carolina since 2011. Before donning the judicial robe, she was an associate and partner at Womble Carlyle Sandridge and Rice PLLC. Furthermore, she brings her wealth of experience as an associate at Hardaway Law Firm, according to the White House's announcement. Her journey includes a stint as a clerk for Judge Matthew J. Perry Jr. on the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina. She holds a law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law.

Judge Becerra's background is equally captivating. Prior to becoming a magistrate judge in the Southern District of Florida in 2019, she held the position of a shareholder at Greenberg Traurig, PA. Additionally, she took on multiple roles within the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida. She's a graduate of Yale Law School.

Judge Damian, currently serving in the Southern District of Florida, boasts a diverse career. Her path led her through Damian & Valori LLP, the Ferraro Law Firm, and Kenny Nachwalter PA. Furthermore, she held a vital role as an assistant U.S. Attorney in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida. Her experiences also include clerking for Judge Ursula Ungaro on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida. She's an alumnus of the University of Miami School of Law.

Leibowitz's journey to the judiciary encompasses a unique trajectory. He has served the Braman Management Association since 2012. His past roles include being an assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York and an assistant district attorney for Middlesex County in Cambridge. Notably, he once served as a clerk for Associate Justice Robert G. Flanders Jr. on the Supreme Court of Rhode Island. He's a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School.

Lastly, Judge Sneed's career path has taken her through various legal landscapes. She has been a magistrate judge for the Middle District of Florida since 2015. Previously, she contributed her expertise as a partner at Akerman LLP, an associate, and later a partner at Fowler White Boggs Banker PA, and a litigation associate at Trenam Law. Her early legal career featured clerkships for Judges James Whittemore of the Middle District of Florida and Chris Altenbernd of Florida's Second District Court of Appeal. She's a graduate of Florida State University, College of Law.

A Resounding Impact

Lena Zwarensteyn, senior director of the fair courts program at The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, commented on the significance of these nominations. She emphasized that the inclusion of diverse nominees "cannot be overstated" and described them as a significant step toward making the courts more reflective of their communities. However, she highlighted the need for further action to fill all remaining judicial vacancies with professionals from diverse backgrounds.

According to the conference, if confirmed, Judge Austin would become the sole Black woman to serve as a lifetime judge for the District of South Carolina. Judge Sneed would be the third Black woman to hold this honor for the Middle District of Florida, while Judge Becerra would join the ranks of few Cuban American women to ever serve as a lifetime federal judge.

As the wheels of justice continue to turn, these nominations represent a significant milestone in the effort to diversify the judiciary.
