Breakthrough Listen Trains Powerful Radio Telescope on 31/ATLAS

31ATLAS

In a development that has captivated astronomers worldwide, 31/ATLAS has once again placed humanity’s search for extraterrestrial intelligence in the spotlight. A team of scientists with Breakthrough Listen trained one of the world’s most powerful radio telescopes on the mysterious interstellar object during its closest approach to Earth.

31/ATLAS: A Rare Interstellar Discovery

The object was first detected in July by researchers using the NASA-funded Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) survey telescope in Chile. Moving at a speed far too great to be gravitationally bound to the Sun, the object was quickly identified as only the third confirmed interstellar object ever observed passing through our solar system, following ‘Oumuamua and 2I/Borisov.

Now officially designated 3I/ATLAS, the visitor has fascinated scientists due to both its rarity and its unusual characteristics. Most observational data suggest it is a natural comet, featuring an icy nucleus and a bright cloud of gas and dust known as a coma. Still, the object has not escaped speculation.

Breakthrough Listen and the Search for Signals

On December 19, as 3I/ATLAS passed within approximately 167 million miles of Earth, an international team of researchers affiliated with Breakthrough Listen used the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia—the largest fully steerable single-dish radio telescope in the world—to search for possible artificial radio emissions.

According to a yet-to-be-peer-reviewed paper summarized by the SETI Institute, the results were sobering but unsurprising.

“No artificial radio emission localized to 3I/ATLAS was detected,” SETI noted on its website.

The researchers added that “3I/ATLAS continues to behave as expected from natural astrophysical processes,” while emphasizing that its rarity still makes it “an extremely interesting target for observation.”

More information on the findings can be found via the SETI Institute and the Breakthrough Listen project.

Avi Loeb and the Possibility of Alien Technology in 31/ATLAS

Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb, known for his controversial interpretations of interstellar objects, has argued that the possibility of alien technology—however remote—cannot yet be fully dismissed. Loeb has even developed a “Loeb Scale” to quantify how likely an interstellar object is to be artificial, ranging from zero (natural rock) to ten (confirmed alien technology).

Shortly after its discovery, Loeb rated 3I/ATLAS a four, though he has since declined to revise that estimate pending additional data. “New data from the period bracketing its closest approach to Earth” must first be released and analyzed, he said.

Loeb continues to document what he describes as “anomalies,” including the object’s suspected size and its finely tuned trajectory past Mars, Venus, and Jupiter. His ongoing analysis is detailed in a Medium essay, Updating the Loeb Classification Scale of 3I/ATLAS.

31/ATLAS Natural, but Still Intriguing

Despite these speculations, the consensus within the astronomical community remains clear. The Breakthrough Listen team concluded that “3I/ATLAS exhibits mostly typical cometary characteristics,” and that “there is currently no evidence to suggest that interstellar objects are anything other than natural astrophysical objects.”

As ScienceAlert noted in its coverage, the silence from 3I/ATLAS may be the most telling signal of all. If an extraterrestrial probe were passing so close to Earth, wouldn’t it attempt contact—especially given how loudly our planet broadcasts radio signals into space?

For now, 3I/ATLAS appears to be just what the data suggest: a massive, icy traveler from another star system. Even so, its passage underscores how much remains unknown—and how closely scientists will continue to listen.
