A quiet neighborhood was shattered by violence in the Burbank home stabbing, where a mother was killed and her daughter wounded in a brutal attack that has left a community searching for answers.

Police announced Tuesday that a suspect is now in custody following the deadly incident that unfolded inside a home on North Brighton Street.

Arrest Made After Hours-Long Search

Authorities said 59-year-old Arti Varma was found fatally stabbed Monday morning. Her daughter, identified by neighbors as Meera Varma, survived the assault and remains hospitalized in stable condition.

More than 12 hours after the attack, officers arrested 30-year-old Sergio Fraire. He was taken into custody after police executed a search warrant at a residence on East Palm Avenue, where he was believed to be staying.

Investigators said they recovered evidence linked to the stabbing at the location. Fraire has been booked on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. A motive has not yet been determined, and it remains unclear whether he had any connection to the victims.

A Community in Mourning

The killing has sent shockwaves through Burbank, where Varma was known not just as a neighbor, but as a beloved educator.

She taught first grade at Bret Harte Elementary School, part of the Burbank Unified School District. Her death marks the second loss of a teacher at the school in just two years — a painful echo that has deepened the grief.

“This news is heartbreaking,” Interim Superintendent Oscar Macias said in a statement. “Our deepest condolences are with Ms. Varma’s students, colleagues, friends, and loved ones.”

He added that counseling and mental health support services will be made available for students and staff struggling to cope with the loss.

Daughter Known for Advocacy

Varma’s daughter, Meera, is widely recognized as a mental health advocate who has worked alongside prominent figures, including Oprah Winfrey, Joe Biden, Jill Biden, and Kamala Harris.

While authorities have not officially released her name, neighbors confirmed her identity, describing her as a passionate voice for mental health awareness — a stark contrast to the violence that now surrounds her story.

Questions Linger in the Aftermath

Friends and neighbors say the attack feels like a bolt from the blue — sudden, incomprehensible, and deeply unsettling.

Arti Varma was remembered as someone who embraced her heritage, often decorating her home for Diwali celebrations. That same home has now become the center of an active homicide investigation.

Residents are grappling with fear and confusion, unsure whether the violence was random or personal.

“Is it something we need to worry about as a neighborhood?” one neighbor asked. “If it’s someone they knew, that makes it even harder to understand. They were such good people.”
