The dangers of drug use are very well-documented. Many people get introduced to drugs through folks they know or in environments they frequent.

A majority of drug addicts also start as individuals just wanting to try a substance and believing they can quit anytime they please. Unfortunately, it's not always that manageable and users can quickly spiral into dependence.

One state that's known for its struggle with drug addiction is none other than California. Public officials and civilians alike have called for leaders like Gov. Gavin Newsom to start cracking down on cases of people openly shooting up with drugs in the middle of the streets.

Earlier this week, the California governor revealed efforts his state will employ to crack down on the drug known as "tranq."

A legislative approach

With the support of state officials, Newsom is throwing his weight behind laws that will penalize individuals for unlawfully selling this drug. Folks who misuse tranq will also find themselves in legal trouble, should the laws in question pass.

Community leaders looking to battle drug usage and addiction continue to speak out about the dangers of tranq. So far, it's come to light that tranq is being blended with other substances, such as cocaine, fentanyl, and heroin. That means someone can unknowingly ingest it and pay dearly as a result.

Tranq, when used properly, soothes animals as needed. Unfortunately, as more individuals consume this drug, overdose rates are skyrocketing. Though, the aforementioned laws backed by the California governor won't adversely impact veterinarians needing to use tranq for work purposes.

In additional public remarks, Newsom stated on top of cracking down against tranq abuses, California is likewise continuing its work with individuals struggling to overcome drug abuse and addiction.

A nationwide epidemic

As California endeavors to combat tranq misusage, the United States collectively faces a serious drug abuse epidemic. After all, the illegal narcotics trade doesn't only fuel the unlawful consumption of tranq. It also drives the ingestion of fentanyl and other substances laced with deadly narcotics.

Putting a permanent end to this will require ongoing work at the local, state, and national levels.
