A major class action filed May 4, 2026, accuses five of the nation's largest cannabis companies of peddling recreational marijuana as medicine — while allegedly hiding catastrophic mental health risks from millions of consumers.

They promised relief from anxiety, better sleep, and freedom from chronic pain. Instead, according to a sweeping new class action lawsuit, what millions of Americans got was psychosis, schizophrenia, heart attacks — and a bill for products that never did what their sellers swore they would.

On May 4, 2026, powerhouse litigation firm Weitz & Luxenberg fired a legal broadside against five of the most recognizable names in the cannabis industry — Cresco Labs, Green Thumb Industries, Verano Holdings, Verano Holdings LLC, and Curaleaf Holdings — filing simultaneous lawsuits in federal courts in Connecticut and the Northern District of Illinois, and in the Circuit Court of Madison County, Illinois.

The claim? A calculated, industry-wide campaign of consumer fraud that allegedly turned recreational marijuana into a fake medical product — marketed through websites, social media, in-store conversations, phone calls, and chat bots — all to drive sales, regardless of the human cost.

The allegations go well beyond misleading labels. According to W&L partner James Bilsborrow, these companies instructed employees at dispensaries — commonly called "budtenders" — to personally tout unproven medical benefits to customers. They created a market from scratch and then flooded it with false claims: that their cannabis products could treat everything from depression and glaucoma to epileptic seizures and pain. None of it, the lawsuits allege, was supported by credible science or FDA approval.

What was buried, critics say, was far more damning. High-concentration THC — the chemical compound at the heart of every product these companies sell — has been linked in medical research to psychosis, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, suicidal ideation, severe depression, heart attacks, stroke, and cannabis hyperemesis syndrome. Pregnant users faced the risk of fetal harm. None of those risks, the suits claim, were adequately disclosed.

Legal claims in the filings include fraud, racketeering, negligence, strict liability, failure to adequately warn, breach of express warranty, and unjust enrichment. The economic argument is straightforward: consumers paid real money for products that simply did not possess the qualities they were told they had.

If you purchased a recreational cannabis product from any of these companies within the last two years — and you bought it believing it had genuine medicinal properties, or believing it carried no serious mental health risks — you may be eligible to join one of these class actions.
