cash app 15 million security settlement

For some Cash App users, a long-running data security dispute could soon turn into money in their pockets.

Payments tied to a cash app 15 million security settlement are expected to begin reaching approved claimants this month after a class-action lawsuit accused Cash App and its parent company, Block, of failing to adequately protect users and their account information.

The lawsuit, approved as a class action in 2025, alleges that Cash App and Block "were negligent and breached" their obligations to customers following two separate security incidents.

One incident occurred in 2022, when a former Cash App Investing employee allegedly accessed account information without authorization. A second incident came in 2023, when an unauthorized individual accessed certain Cash App accounts using recycled phone numbers that remained connected to those accounts.

Together, the incidents triggered a legal battle that ultimately produced a $15 million settlement fund.

Who Was Eligible for the Cash App Settlement?

The settlement covered current and former Cash App users whose account or personal information was obtained without their permission, as well as users who experienced fraudulent withdrawals or transfers during the specified period.

The eligible period ran from Aug. 23, 2018, through Aug. 20, 2024.

Users who fell within the settlement class were required to submit a claim to seek compensation from the fund. Those who successfully filed claims could be entitled to payments depending on their documented losses and the terms of the settlement.

Payments Could Reach $2,500

For approved claims, compensation could reach as much as $2,500 for qualifying out-of-pocket expenses that were "fairly traceable" to the security incidents.

Those losses could include a range of costs stemming from the alleged data breaches and unauthorized account activity. Eligible expenses included credit-related costs, bank fees and travel expenses.

Claimants could also receive compensation for time lost because of the incidents.

The settlement allowed compensation for up to three hours of lost time at a rate of $25 per hour, according to the settlement website.

That means the settlement was not limited solely to money directly taken from an account. Certain expenses incurred while dealing with the fallout from the security incidents could also factor into a claimant's payment.

When Will Cash App Settlement Payments Arrive?

The latest update from the settlement administrator has given claimants a more precise timeline.

The settlement website was updated in September and said that distributions to approved claims would be issued in October 2026.

As a result, users who submitted valid claims and were approved for payment are expected to receive their settlement money this month.

The payments mark the latest chapter in a case that began with questions about who could access Cash App information and whether users were adequately protected when unauthorized access occurred.

For affected customers, the settlement may provide some financial relief after years of uncertainty. But the process also underscores how a seemingly ordinary account can become vulnerable when personal information, phone numbers and digital financial systems collide.

The cash app $15 million security settlement ultimately places a $15 million pool behind eligible claims, with individual payments determined by the settlement's requirements and the losses that claimants can establish.
