Caught on Camera: Bloody NYPD Beating of Wrong Man Sparks Outrage in Brooklyn

A shocking, blood-soaked confrontation inside a Brooklyn liquor store is now under investigation after video captured police officers violently beating a man they later admitted had no connection to the crime they were pursuing.

The footage, now spreading rapidly online, shows a chaotic and disturbing scene that has sparked outrage and renewed scrutiny over police conduct in high-pressure investigations.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani did not mince words, calling the officers’ actions “extremely disturbing and unacceptable” in a social media post Wednesday.

Violent Arrest Unfolds on Camera

The video shows two officers restraining the man inside the store — one wearing an NYPD-issued vest and badge, the other in plain clothes.

What follows is a brutal sequence.

The man is punched repeatedly. His head is slammed into the counter window. His arms are pinned behind his back as the assault continues.

Moments later, the plainclothes officer drives his knee into the man’s midsection multiple times.

The impact sends the man crashing into a shelf of glass bottles.

They shatter.

Glass explodes across the floor as the man begins to bleed.

Instead of stopping, both officers drag him through the broken glass toward the front of the store.

They force him onto his stomach.

The officer in the NYPD vest continues kicking him, pressing a foot into the back of his leg, while the other officer yells, “Roll over!”

Witness Confronts Officers

The violence drew immediate reaction from bystanders.

Abelee Moran, who recorded the incident, can be heard shouting at the officers, “Y’all violating the First Amendment for no reason.”

One officer fires back, “You can’t resist arrest,” while leaning over the man.

On the ground, the victim cries out in agony: “My leg!”

Despite his screams, the struggle continues for several more minutes as officers work to handcuff him, arguing with onlookers before finally escorting him out of the store.

Mistaken Identity at the Center of Case

NYPD: The Man ‘Matched the Description’

According to officials, the officers were operating undercover in the Cobble Hill neighborhood following complaints of drug activity.

Police say one officer had just “successfully purchased crack cocaine” and arrested a suspect when they spotted another man nearby.

They believed he was connected.

The reason: he “matched the description” of an associate — “wearing a white shirt and green shorts,” according to an NYPD spokesperson.

But that assumption proved wrong.

After the violent arrest, investigators determined the man had no ties to the drug sale or the suspect.

Despite that, he was still charged with resisting arrest and issued an appearance ticket.

Discipline and Fallout

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed both officers have been placed on modified duty.

Their guns and shields have been removed as the internal investigation moves forward.

The case is now drawing intense public attention, raising questions about use of force, accountability, and how quickly mistaken identity can escalate into violence.

Witness Speaks Out: ‘I Was Scared’

Moran says the incident has left her shaken.

“I was trying to put this on social media, anyone I can reach out to, you know?” she said. “What happened was not right, not fair.”

As the video continues to circulate, she is grappling with what she saw — and what she wishes she had done.

“Everyone around me is saying I’m a hero, but I felt like I’m so mad at myself that I didn’t throw my body against him to protect this man,” Moran said, her voice trembling.

Fear held her back.

“I was scared that they would beat me the way that they beat him.”

The investigation is ongoing.
