CBS News Layoffs: Catherine Herridge Controversy Over Seized Computer and Files

Catherine Herridge

Last week, CBS News announced the termination of Catherine Herridge, an award-winning investigative journalist.

Herridge was one of 20 CBS News staffers who lost their jobs in a sweeping round of layoffs affecting 800 employees across parent company Paramount Global.

Catherine is known as the “lone’ voice at CBS who investigated and reported on the Hunter Biden laptop story.

Sources claim the award-winning senior correspondent hit “internal roadblocks” at the network as she covered some high-profile stories.

Catherine Herridge Exits CBS

The decision to include Herridge in the layoffs raised eyebrows among industry observers. She has a well-deserved reputation for breaking big stories and securing exclusive scoops for CBS.

Herridge's recent coverage included high-profile events such as the House impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, special counsel Robert Hur's report on handling classified documents, and the legal woes of Hunter Biden.

However, it was her work on the Hunter Biden laptop story that allegedly factored into her conflicts within the network.

SAG-AFTRA Takes a Stand

Herridge has not publicly commented on her firing, other than to post a statement from her union on X.

Accusations emerged that CBS had seized Herridge's files, computers, and records, which included her “privileged sources.” This move was described as "completely inappropriate" and "very unusual" by SAG-AFTRA.

“The retention of a media professional's reporting materials by their former employer is a serious break with traditional practices which supports the immediate return of reporting materials.”

“This action is deeply concerning to the union because it sets a dangerous precedent for all media professionals and threatens the very foundation of the First Amendment,” the statement said.

This development has ignited concerns about press freedom and the potential erosion of First Amendment rights.

The network has refuted the claims of improper seizure. And it says it intends to return Herridge's materials promptly.

A CBS News spokesperson stated that Herridge's personal belongings had already been delivered to her home and assured that the remaining files would be handed over in accordance with her wishes.

The controversy surrounding Herridge's departure coincides with ongoing legal battles rooted in her commitment to protecting journalistic sources.

Safeguarding Sources

Dating back to her tenure at Fox News, Herridge has been embroiled in a high-stakes court case involving her refusal to disclose sources for articles she wrote in 2017.

A judge demanded she reveal sources she used in a series of articles about a Chinese American scientist being investigated by the FBI. The scientist was but never charged with a crime.

Herridge could face fines of up to $5,000 per day if she refuses to be interviewed under oath for the ongoing case.

Journalists nationwide, are closely monitoring the case which underscores broader challenges faced by reporters in safeguarding the confidentiality of their sources.
