Chaos unfolded at the beloved Texas State Fair on Saturday night when the suspected gunman opened fire, injuring three people and prompting the evacuation of the fairgrounds.

The Dallas Police Department identified the suspect as 22-year-old Cameron Turner, who fled the scene but was later apprehended. Police were also able to recover shell casings and 2 handguns, one of which was believed used in the incident. 

Turner currently faces 3 charges of aggravated assault. 

The three victims, two men, and a woman, are expected to make a full recovery, with one of them identified as an innocent bystander, according to FOX 4 in Dallas. The incident unfolded near the fair's bustling food court, around 8 p.m., where terrified fairgoers scrambled for safety.

Suspected Gunman captured 

According to the arrest warrant documents Turner claimed, "he was attempting to protect his family when he was approached by a group of big males." He told officers he then "went into survival mode and felt threatened by the (man) so he shot."

Turner claims he was aiming down toward the concrete, and the wounded were all hit by ricochet bullets near the food court.

But investigators were able to view the surveillance security video from inside the food court, which conflicts with Turner’s story.

Officers wrote in the arrest report, "Turner was by himself - his family was not next to him" when he went to buy a bottle of water.

On the video several men were seen in the background approaching Turner., One of them then stopped and exchanged words with Turner. That's when Turner allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired 3-4 times, according to witnesses, hitting the man who approached him along with two people who were nearby.

Investigators wrote in the warrant "nothing was in the (man's) hand who approached Turner, nor did he reach for anything."

The man who confronted Turner and was shot, according to jail records, has declined to cooperate with the investigation.

Witnesses at the scene described a sequence of gunshots, a brief pause, and then another shot that added to the confusion and panic when the suspected gunman ran from the scene.

Notably, the State Fair of Texas strictly prohibits weapons on its premises, although an exception exists for licensed gun owners.

Security at Fair under review

 Karissa Condoianis, the Senior Vice President of Public Relations for the State Fair of Texas, emphasized this policy, saying, "We don't allow weapons in the State Fair of Texas; however, we understand that Texans have the right to carry their weapons. So, we have a middle ground where those that have a license to carry are allowed to come in with a concealed weapon."

The breach of security raises questions about how Turner managed to enter the fairgrounds with a firearm, particularly given the new open-gate weapons detection system implemented this year. 

This system is designed to identify individuals carrying weapons and subsequently alert security for more thorough inspections.

With the State Fair of Texas entering its final week of operation, the fair's management is committed to enhancing security measures to ensure the safety and enjoyment of fairgoers. 

Authorities will undoubtedly continue their investigation into this alarming incident to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. The incident serves as a stark reminder that even in family-friendly settings, vigilance and security must remain a top priority.
