The Texas State Fair in Dallas was plunged into chaos on Saturday night when gunfire erupted. As the shots rang out attendees ran for their lives. And were directed to evacuate the fairgrounds.

The incident occurred in the food court at the Tower Building around 7:45 p.m.

According to the Dallas police, the shooting occurred when one man opened fire on another man in the food court of the Tower Building. The gunfire left three people injured. Their injuries were not life-threatening.

The victims’ names were not released. Police report that everyone involved in the incident has been identified. Although it is known that one of the victims was a maintenance worker at the fair. Officers recovered a gun at the scene.

Shortly after the shooting police took a suspect into custody around 8 p.m., although the suspect’s identity remains undisclosed. The rapid response from law enforcement and Fair authorities ensured that the situation was contained as swiftly as possible, preserving the safety of attendees.

The State Fair announced it will delay opening till 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Texas State Fair panic

This delay is intended to allow for thorough security checks and measures to ensure the safety of fairgoers. The victims involved in the incident remain unidentified, while the suspect was taken into custody near the scene of the shooting. A firearm was also recovered, and all parties related to the incident have been identified.

The immediate aftermath of the shooting was characterized by chaos, panic, and fear. Videos posted online captured the harrowing moments as attendees scattered in search of safety. Near the Midway, dozens of people were seen running in panic, with some desperately looking for their children amidst the confusion.

Many people hid behind rides or in any available cover. This traumatic experience left a lasting impact on those who were present, and some fair employees have expressed concerns about returning to work, citing their fears for their safety.

News of the shooting reverberated through the community, as local leaders, including Dallas City Council member Adam Bazaldua, weighed in on the situation.

Bazaldua, whose district includes Fair Park, said in a post on X that he’d been briefed on the situation by City Manager T.C. Broadnax.

Bazaldua said the shooting was a dispute between individuals who knew each other.  He used the incident to call for "meaningful gun legislation," emphasizing the need for responsible firearm policies to prevent such senseless acts of violence.

Security Measures review

The State Fair of Texas implemented various security measures for 2023, but the incident highlights the ongoing challenges of maintaining safety at public events. The fair's website explicitly states that no weapons are allowed on the premises; however, it also mentions that attendees with valid handgun licenses can carry concealed firearms.

The fair utilizes an "open gate system," meaning visitors do not pass through metal detectors, which may raise concerns about security vulnerabilities.

The shooting incident at the Texas State Fair has once again raised questions about safety at public events and ignited debates about gun legislation in the state. As the fairgoers and the community grapple with the shock of the incident, the call for stricter gun regulations is gaining momentum.
