Psyche mission

In a historic moment for space exploration, NASA's Psyche Mission launched on its journey to study an enigmatic metallic asteroid today. Psyche, a first-of-its-kind mission, soared into the heavens atop a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, heralding a new era in interplanetary exploration.

The Psyche spacecraft embarks on a historic mission to explore a metallic space rock in the asteroid belt.

The much-anticipated liftoff took place at 10:19 a.m. EDT from Pad 39A at the Kennedy Space Center, marking several firsts in the annals of space exploration.

While SpaceX's Falcon Heavy previously launched Elon Musk's Tesla Roadster past the orbit of Mars in 2018, Psyche is the rocket's first official interplanetary mission. Additionally, Psyche is the inaugural NASA mission to lift off aboard a Falcon Heavy.

The momentous occasion was further accentuated by the sight of Falcon Heavy's three boosters roaring to life. A total of 27 first-stage Merlin engines produced an awe-inspiring 5 million pounds of thrust, propelling Psyche on its 2.2-billion-mile journey to the asteroid belt, nestled between Mars and Jupiter.

Psyche Mission

Psyche is one of several upcoming missions contracted with NASA, a testament to the versatility of the Falcon Heavy rocket. During a prelaunch press conference on October 11, Tim Dunn, senior launch director for NASA's Launch Services Program, revealed plans to recycle the side boosters. These boosters will be repurposed for a Department of Defense launch later this fall, and again in 2024 for the Falcon Heavy launch of NASA's Europa Clipper mission.

Approximately 2.5 minutes into the mission, the Falcon Heavy's side boosters gracefully cut off their engines and separated from the central core stage. These boosters would perform simultaneous landings back at Florida's Space Coast.

Four minutes later, the core booster, having completed its task, shut down its first-stage engines and separated from the rocket's second stage. The second stage would carry Psyche further toward orbital escape velocity.

Eight minutes after liftoff, the side boosters commenced their landing burns, descending to Earth like precision-guided missiles. They touched down at SpaceX's Landing Zones 1 and 2, several miles downrange of Pad 39A, creating four resounding sonic booms that reverberated across the Space Coast.

These side boosters, marking their fourth launch, will undergo refurbishment for future Falcon Heavy missions.

Julianna Scheiman, director of civil satellite missions at SpaceX, expressed enthusiasm for what lies ahead, mentioning upcoming missions like the GOES environmental satellite, Europa Clipper, the Power and Propulsion Element for the Artemis program's moon-orbiting Gateway space station, and NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, all slated for Falcon Heavy launches soon.

Paves the way for Future Missions

Upon reaching orbit, Psyche underwent a pivotal hour of deploying its massive solar arrays, covering an impressive 800 square feet (75 square meters) in total. When fully extended, these arrays span the length of a tennis court, serving as Psyche's primary source of power for the mission.

Notably, Psyche is the first interplanetary spacecraft in NASA's fleet to be equipped with Hall-effect thrusters. This electric propulsion system relies entirely on the spacecraft's solar arrays to harness and convert solar energy into thrust.

The mission's journey wasn't without its share of challenges. Originally scheduled for liftoff on October 5, a mission update in late September resulted in a week-long delay.

During testing at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Southern California, operators discovered a discrepancy in Psyche's cold gas thrusters' thermal control systems, necessitating the rescheduled launch date of October 12.

As the Psyche mission embarks on its 3.5-billion-kilometer journey, it represents a pioneering effort in asteroid exploration, using cutting-edge technology and innovative partnerships to unlock the secrets of our solar system's history.

The successful launch is a testament to the collaboration between NASA and SpaceX and a giant leap forward in our quest to unravel the mysteries of the cosmos. Stay tuned for more updates as Psyche continues its incredible 6-year voyage of discovery.
