Chaos in Iran: Mounting Discontent Amid Economic and Social Crisis

Chaos in Iran

Chaos in Iran is intensifying as public frustration with the regime surges. Economic hardships, worsening living conditions, widespread power outages, and rising inflation have sparked widespread dissatisfaction. Many Iranians are openly calling for change.

Economic Decline and Public Discontent

Benny Sabti, a researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS), shared insights with Maariv on Friday, highlighting the regime's growing struggle to maintain control.

Sabti described the widespread frustration among Iranians with the regime’s economic mismanagement. "People are very angry with the regime for squandering funds, oil revenues, and resources in Syria, which fell alongside Hezbollah," he explained.

"The regime has poured $50 billion into Syria from 2000 until now, all of which vanished into thin air, along with funds sent to Lebanon and other places." According to Sabti, the public perceives this as "a regime failure."

A parliamentary member’s report further highlighted public discontent, pointing to the low voter turnout in the last presidential elections as a significant indicator of opposition to the regime.

Grim Human Rights Record

The regime's oppressive measures are evident in its human rights abuses. Last year, over 1,000 executions were carried out in 86 of Iran’s prisons, including 34 women and 7 juvenile offenders executed after turning 18. Among these were 119 Baluchis, highlighting the regime's targeting of marginalized ethnic groups.

Since 2018 many women have been imprisoned for failing to wear a hijab. Hijabs are head coverings that required by law to be worn in public by Muslim women.

Sabti believes recent developments have given Iranians a glimmer of hope. Key incidents, such as the reported elimination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and "the fall of Gaza," have exposed the regime's vulnerabilities.

"All of this gives the Iranian public—80% of whom oppose the regime—hope," he emphasized.

A parliamentary member’s report further highlighted public discontent, pointing to the low voter turnout in the last presidential elections as a significant indicator of opposition to the regime.

Iran has been involved in a proxy war with Isreal and the West. At the same time, it is experiencing discord and rioting on the streets.

Multiple Issues Contribute to Chaos in Iran

Daily power outages lasting six to seven hours are common in Tehran and other regions, with even longer outages in remote areas.

These outages lead to water shortages and severe air pollution as factories and homes rely on ship fuel instead of cleaner energy sources. "On some days, people are forbidden to leave their homes—children, adults, government offices, and banks alike," Sabti noted.

The economic crisis has halted much of Iran's industrial sector. Unemployment, already at 23%, has risen by an additional 12 percentage points. While small protests by workers occasionally occur near factories, these scattered demonstrations still worry the regime.

Sabti highlighted the regime’s recent protest-response drill as a sign of its growing anxiety. "Why would they hold a protest drill?" he asked. "The regime anticipates demonstrations and uprisings. They understand that things are very fragile."

Mounting Financial and Political Pressures

Inflation and currency devaluation are worsening Iran's economic woes. The value of the dollar has surged from 460,000–480,000 rials to 820,000 rials, directly impacting imports and exacerbating financial strain.

Sabti also pointed to the regime's perceived failures on the international stage. While Iranian officials threaten retaliation against Israel, an Iranian general recently admitted, "We’ve been defeated."

Another official reportedly stated, "We cannot retaliate against Israel or launch a third operation."

Calls for International Intervention

Many Iranians remain hopeful for international support to weaken the regime.

Sabti explained, "They hope for Trump's return and believe he will enact significant changes. They admire Israel’s decisive actions and even call for strikes on Revolutionary Guard facilities that oppress them."

Sabti concluded with a warning: "The events are converging—this is a decisive year." Despite the regime's ambitions for nuclear capabilities, he labeled such efforts as "suicide."
