On Dec. 30, Argentina's National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office announced charges against five individuals in connection with the death of One Direction singer Liam Payne.

The singer passed away on Oct. 16 at the CasaSur Hotel in Buenos Aires.

Five Charged in Tragic Incident

 Among the accused are hotel employees Gilda Martin and Esteban Grassi, as well as Payne’s friend, Roger Nores.

According to the prosecutor’s office, Nores allegedly failed "to fulfill his duties of care, assistance and help" by abandoning Payne despite being aware of the singer’s "multiple addictions."

 Meanwhile, Martin and Grassi are accused of failing to ensure Payne’s safety by allowing him, while intoxicated, to return to his third-floor hotel room. Payne ultimately fell from the room's balcony.

In addition, the BBC reports that two others, hotel employee Ezequiel Pereyra and waiter Braian Paiz, have been charged with supplying drugs to Payne. Pereyra is suspected of selling cocaine to the singer on Oct. 15 and Oct. 16, while Paiz is accused of supplying the drug twice on Oct. 14.

If convicted, Martin, Grassi, and Nores could face prison sentences ranging from 1 to 5 years. Pereyra and Paiz, however, face more severe penalties, with potential sentences of 4 to 15 years in prison.

Investigation Results Revealed
A post-mortem examination revealed that Payne, 31, died from "multiple" injuries and internal and external bleeding. Toxicology reports confirmed the presence of alcohol, cocaine, and a prescription antidepressant in his system at the time of death. Investigators concluded that Payne suffered "multiple traumas" as a result of his fall.

Authorities have ruled out self-harm, citing evidence that Payne did not adopt a reflexive posture to protect himself during the fall. This finding suggests he may have fallen "in a state of semi or total unconsciousness." The prosecutor's office hypothesized that Payne might have attempted to leave his room via the balcony, leading to the fatal fall.

In Payne’s hotel room, investigators discovered what appeared to be narcotics and alcohol amidst broken objects and furniture.

These findings support the hypothesis that Payne experienced a substance abuse-induced breakdown shortly before his death.

One Direction Singer Remembered

The death of Liam Payne has left an indelible mark on his fans, colleagues, and former bandmates. In a heartfelt statement, One Direction members Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson expressed their grief.

“We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing,” the statement read. “In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly.”

The bandmates continued, “The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever. For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us. We will miss him terribly. We love you, Liam.”

Payne leaves behind a 7-year-old son, Bear. He shared the child with his former partner, Cheryl Cole.
