In a landmark partnership that underscores the growing energy demands of artificial intelligence, Chevron has signed a 20-year agreement to supply natural gas to Microsoft’s enormous new data center in West Texas.

The project, dubbed Project Kilby, is expected to consume a staggering 2.7 gigawatts of electricity — enough to power roughly 2 million homes. Most of that power will come from large gas turbines provided by Chevron’s partner GE Vernova, with additional support from Caterpillar. Crucially, the dedicated energy supply will not connect to the local electric grid, ensuring it serves the data center exclusively.

Chevron’s president of new energies, Jeff Gustavson, emphasized the project’s self-contained nature: “There’s really no competition with local electricity consumers. In fact, over time, as we have excess power, we plan to push that into the grid to help stabilize it.”

Construction has not yet begun in Reeves County, with a final investment decision expected later this year and power delivery slated for 2028.

This ambitious collaboration highlights a critical reality in the AI boom: the explosive growth of data centers is driving unprecedented demand for reliable, scalable energy — and Microsoft is increasingly willing to partner directly with fossil fuel giants like Chevron to meet it. While the tech giant has heavily invested in renewables, the need for constant 24/7 power is pushing it toward natural gas and even nuclear restarts, as seen with its 2024 deal for Three Mile Island.

For Chevron, the deal represents a major opportunity to leverage its vast Permian Basin resources and position itself as a key player in the AI infrastructure boom. As AI applications continue to proliferate, energy infrastructure is becoming the new battleground — and partnerships like this could reshape how the tech and energy sectors collaborate in the years ahead.

The move also raises broader questions about the environmental trade-offs of rapid AI expansion and whether natural gas will serve as a bridge fuel or a long-term pillar in powering the digital future.
