The Clone Saga could be coming to television as Sony Pictures Television and Prime Video look to continue their involvement with the Spider-Man universe following the cancellation of Spider-Noir, the Nicolas Cage-led series based on Marvel's alternate Spider-Man Noir character.

According to Deadline, a new Spider-Man television series based on the 1990s Marvel Comics storyline is nearing a greenlight. If approved, the project would be part of Sony Pictures' Universe of Marvel Characters.

Kelvin Yu, creator of American Born Chinese, is reportedly writing the series.

The proposed show would draw from the second major arc of Marvel's Spider-Man Clone Saga, a sprawling storyline that ran across the comics from 1994 to 1996. The story remains one of the more controversial and complicated chapters in Spider-Man history because it dramatically questioned the identity of the character fans had followed for decades.

What was Spider-Noir?

Spider-Noir was a live-action television adaptation centered on Spider-Man Noir, an alternate version of Peter Parker introduced in Marvel Comics.

Set in a darker, crime-oriented version of the Spider-Man mythos, the series starred Nicolas Cage as an older version of Spider-Man Noir. The character originated in Marvel's alternate-universe stories and was designed as a hard-boiled interpretation of Spider-Man, with the comics drawing heavily from pulp detective fiction and 1930s-era crime stories.

Prime Video ultimately canceled Spider-Noir after one season. The cancellation was reported in September 2026, ending the series despite strong critical reception.

The Clone Saga begins with a mysterious clone

The roots of the 1990s Clone Saga stretch back to a 1973 Spider-Man storyline involving the villain known as the Jackal.

In that original story, the Jackal creates a clone of Peter Parker. Spider-Man eventually battles the duplicate, and the clone is believed to have died.

The 1990s storyline revisits that premise by revealing that the clone survived.

That character is Ben Reilly, who adopts the identity of the Scarlet Spider and eventually becomes one of the central figures in the Clone Saga.

Another important character is Kaine Parker, an earlier and imperfect clone of Peter. Kaine initially functions as an antagonist but later develops into an antihero and takes on the Scarlet Spider identity.

Peter Parker's identity is questioned in Clone Saga

The Clone Saga becomes increasingly complicated when Peter Parker and Ben Reilly are led to believe that Ben may actually be the original Peter Parker.

The revelation temporarily changes the status quo of the comics. Ben takes over as Spider-Man, while Peter's story moves in another direction.

The storyline ultimately reverses the revelation. Ben is killed, and Peter is established as the original Spider-Man.

The saga ran for roughly two years and crossed numerous Spider-Man titles. Its complex plot, multiple clones and shifting revelations made it one of the most debated storylines in the character's history.

What could the TV series be about?

Reports differ over how closely the proposed television series would follow the comics.

One version would focus on Ben Reilly and Kaine after they discover that they are clones of Peter Parker. The two would have to deal with their identities while confronting other clones and threats connected to the Jackal.

Another reported version would make more substantial changes to the source material, potentially altering Ben and Kaine's origins so they are not actually clones of Peter.

Those conflicting reports mean the final premise remains unclear if the project receives a greenlight.

What is clearer is the reported intention to continue expanding Sony's television presence around Spider-Man characters.

The project would also arrive after the end of Spider-Noir, giving Prime Video and Sony another opportunity to approach the Spider-Man mythology from a different angle.

A new chapter for Spider-Man on television

Spider-Man has already appeared in multiple live-action television projects and animated series, but the proposed Clone Saga adaptation would tackle one of the character's most recognizable — and complicated — comic-book storylines.

The original Clone Saga remains notable because it temporarily challenged the fundamental question of who Peter Parker really was. Ben Reilly's brief period as Spider-Man remains an important part of the character's publishing history, while Kaine eventually developed into a major character in his own right.

Whether the new series follows the comics closely or creates a substantially different version of the story will depend on the eventual development of the project.

For now, the reported series is still awaiting a greenlight.
