Connecticut Woman Accused of Poisoned Wine Plot Against Estranged Husband in Custody Battle

Poison Wine

A Connecticut woman locked in a heated custody dispute is accused of trying to murder her estranged husband using poisoned wine with a deadly chemical used in antifreeze.

According to an arrest affidavit filed by the Connecticut State Police, Kristen Hogan, 33, faces two counts of attempted murder and one count of interfering with an officer for allegedly mixing ethylene glycol — a toxic substance commonly found in antifreeze — into her husband’s wine and tea.

‘Poisoned Wine’ Plot Alleged in Connecticut Custody Case

Investigators say Hogan’s estranged husband was hospitalized on August 10 after drinking from a bottle of wine that had been opened five days earlier and stored in the refrigerator — wine he claims Hogan accessed while he was not home.

“Doctors believed he was exhibiting signs of ethylene glycol poisoning,” the affidavit said, noting that he was placed on dialysis after being rushed to the hospital.

Investigation Uncovers Internet Searches for Deadly Chemicals

After falling severely ill, the victim told investigators he believed Hogan had poisoned the wine on August 7, the same day she was supposed to appear in court for a custody hearing but never showed up.

When police examined Hogan’s cellphone, they discovered multiple searches for lethal substances, including “potassium cyanide, potassium ferricyanide, citrate-cyanide, potassium thiocyanate, and monoethylene glycol.” One search specifically asked, “how much of these substances would kill you.”

Wife Confesses to Poisoned Wine

Hogan initially denied wrongdoing, claiming she recognized the word “cyanide” from the television show Psych and told police she bought monoethylene glycol to clean her mother’s carpet. However, after further questioning, she allegedly confessed to mixing the poisonous liquid into her husband’s wine.

“Hogan stated she did not know how much ethylene glycol she put into his drink, but she just poured it in,” police wrote.

Testing later confirmed that both the wine and a separate bottle of iced tea were contaminated with ethylene glycol. Authorities believe the iced tea was poisoned on a different date.

Child Also Hospitalized After Drinking Poisoned Wine

The couple’s young child was later hospitalized in late September with symptoms similar to the father’s after reportedly drinking some of the same poisoned wine. Hogan denied the child had been exposed to the toxin, saying only the wine and iced tea were tainted.

“Hogan stated it was only the wine and the iced tea, and nobody else knew she was tampering with [the victim’s] drinks,” the affidavit said.

Authorities said Hogan’s motive was likely tied to custody and property disputes. According to the victim, Hogan stood to gain full ownership of the couple’s home and full-time custody of their child if he died.

‘Payback’ for Alleged Abuse

During her police interview, Hogan reportedly claimed she never intended to kill her husband but admitted she wanted him to suffer.

“She did want to get him sick as payback for him being mentally abusive,” the affidavit quotes her as saying.

Hogan remains in custody and faces serious prison time if convicted. Her arrest has stunned the Ridgefield community, where she was known as a stay-at-home mother involved in local school activities.

Ethylene Glycol: The Hidden Danger in Antifreeze

Ethylene glycol is a sweet-tasting but deadly chemical found in automotive antifreeze. Even small amounts can cause severe kidney damage or death. Poisoning cases involving the chemical often mimic symptoms of intoxication before rapidly progressing to organ failure.

In this case, doctors initially thought the victim was suffering a stroke before determining his condition was consistent with ethylene glycol poisoning. Prompt medical intervention saved his life.
