Could Ancient Satellites Be Orbiting Earth Right Now? Harvard’s Top Astronomer Just Asked the Question That Changes Everything

What if the most shocking revelation in the coming UFO disclosure isn't about little green men from a distant galaxy — but about a civilization that lived and died right here on Earth, millions of years before humanity ever drew its first breath?

That's the jaw-dropping question Harvard astrophysicist Professor Avi Loeb has now put on the table, and I'm telling you — once you go down this rabbit hole, you don't come back the same.

The Man Who Refuses to Look Away

Avi Loeb isn't your average armchair theorist. He's the former chair of Harvard's Department of Astronomy, the founder of the Galileo Project, and arguably the most credentialed scientist on the planet willing to say out loud what others whisper behind closed doors: we may not be alone, and we may never have been.

In his latest Medium post, Loeb raises a series of questions that are as scientifically grounded as they are mind-bending. And given the Trump administration's directive to begin declassifying and releasing UFO/UAP files to the public — files that will reportedly appear on the newly launched aliens.gov — Loeb's timing couldn't be more electric.

A Civilization That May Have Predated Us — On Our Own Planet

Here's where things get wild, so stay with me.

Loeb points out that Earth is approximately 4.54 billion years old. Life itself began roughly 4.2 billion years ago with what scientists call LUCA — the Last Universal Common Ancestor. Now, modern Homo sapiens have only been around for about 300,000 years, and we launched our first satellite — Sputnik — in 1957. That means it took us roughly 300,000 years to reach orbital spaceflight capability.

So here's the thought experiment Loeb lays out: What if intelligent life emerged on Earth 272 million years ago — when our planet was about 94% of its current age? A civilization that had a 20-million-year head start on technological development could have been launching satellites long before the first dinosaur ever walked the Earth.

And then — roughly 252 million years ago — something catastrophic happened.

The Permian Extinction. The "Great Dying." The single most devastating extinction event in Earth's known history, wiping out 96% of all marine species in what scientists have long attributed to volcanic greenhouse gas emissions and runaway global warming.

But Loeb asks the question that no one in mainstream science wants to touch: What if it wasn't volcanic? What if it was technological?

What if a pre-human civilization — advanced, space-capable, and careless with its atmosphere, much like we are today — triggered its own extinction through industrial-scale climate destruction?

Think about that for a moment. Really sit with it.

The Cover-Up No One Could Have Planned

Here's the cruel twist of deep time: over 252 million years, plate tectonics would have erased nearly every trace of such a civilization. Subduction zones swallow surface crust into the mantle. Volcanic activity resurfaces new material. Any cities, any ruins, any artifacts — gone. Ground into geological history.

But satellites? Satellites in stable orbit?

Those might still be up there.

Loeb suggests that sufficiently advanced orbital technology — built by a civilization that existed a quarter-billion years ago — could theoretically have survived in the vacuum of space, where there's no weathering, no erosion, no plate tectonics to consume the evidence.

And if such objects are up there, what would our military call them?

Unidentified Flying Objects.

The Files Are Coming — And Loeb Is Ready

This is where Loeb's hypothesis intersects with one of the biggest political and transparency stories of our time. President Trump has directed intelligence and defense agencies to begin releasing classified UAP/UFO files to the American public. The White House has stood up aliens.gov as the portal through which these disclosures will flow.

Most of Washington is treating this like a political spectacle. Loeb is treating it like a scientific opportunity.

He has stated plainly that the moment these never-before-seen videos and files are made public, his Galileo Project research team will begin analyzing them — and will share their preliminary findings with the public directly, without waiting for government interpretation or spin.

His standard is clear: if the data shows objects performing beyond the known performance envelope of any human-made technology, that's not a matter of belief or opinion. That's a data point. And data points demand investigation.

"The question of whether non-human-made technological objects are lurking in the sky is not a matter of opinion or belief," Loeb writes. "It should be answered by scientific data analysis."

That's the kind of intellectual courage this moment demands — and frankly, the kind this country hasn't seen enough of from its scientific establishment.

Even Time Travel Is on the Table

Loeb doesn't stop at prehistoric civilizations. In a passage that is equal parts haunting and deeply personal, he raises the possibility — purely speculative, he acknowledges — that some UAPs could represent visitors from our own future, should humanity one day develop time travel technology.

He grounds this speculation with something profoundly human. He writes that he would have used such a machine himself — to go back and stop the Holocaust, which claimed 65 members of his father's family in Nazi concentration camps. His grandfather, Albert Loeb — the man Avi is named after — was wise enough to flee Germany in 1936. Others in his family believed their German patriotism would protect them.

It didn't.

I share that detail not to sensationalize, but because it matters. It reminds us that behind every scientific question is a human being, shaped by history, driven by loss, and motivated by something larger than career or prestige. That's the Avi Loeb I find credible. That's the scientist worth listening to right now.

What This Means for the UFO Disclosure Moment We're Living Through

Let me be direct with you, because that's what I do.

The UFO disclosure conversation in America has too often been dominated by two camps: true believers who abandon all skepticism, and institutional dismissers who mock inquiry as a career defense mechanism. Loeb represents a third path — rigorous, data-driven, and genuinely open to outcomes that might shatter our assumptions about life, history, and our place in the cosmos.

His most likely explanation for what the UFO files will show? Misidentified natural phenomena, optical illusions, or human-made objects that confused analysts. He's not betting on aliens. He's betting on science.

But he's also not ruling anything out. And in a moment when the federal government is about to release classified material the American public has never seen — material that has been locked away for decades — that kind of disciplined open-mindedness is exactly what we need guiding the public conversation.

The files are coming. The questions are ready. And for the first time, so is the science.
