Cumulus Media Files for Chapter 11 as Radio Giant Moves to Cut Massive Debt

Cumulus Media files for chapter 11

In a dramatic turn for one of America’s largest radio broadcasters, Cumulus Media has filed for bankruptcy protection, seeking a financial reset as traditional radio faces relentless pressure from digital competitors.

The Atlanta-based company — which operates nearly 400 AM and FM radio stations across the United Statesconfirmed it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last week in an effort to restructure and eliminate a substantial portion of its debt.

A Bid to Wipe Away Hundreds of Millions in Debt

According to reports, the restructuring aims to clear most of the company’s $697 million debt burden, allowing the broadcaster to stabilize its finances and continue operations.

If the court approves the plan, the restructuring would erase existing equity shares and shift ownership of the company to its lenders. Court documents show those lenders support the plan because it would eliminate roughly $592 million in debt.

The move marks a critical financial crossroads for the broadcaster, which has been navigating a rapidly evolving audio landscape.

Digital Rivals Reshape the Audio Industry

Company leaders say the decision to restructure stems from mounting challenges across the radio industry.

Competition from digital audio services and streaming platforms — including giants like Spotify and Apple Musichas steadily reshaped how audiences consume content.

At the same time, shifts in advertising spending and yearly declines in traditional radio audiences have tightened the financial vise around broadcasters.

The result has been a slow but persistent erosion of revenue, forcing legacy media companies like Cumulus to rethink their strategies.

A National Radio Footprint

Despite the financial headwinds, Cumulus still commands a vast broadcasting network.

The company operates 394 radio stations across more than 80 markets nationwide, making it the second-largest radio station owner in the United States, behind iHeartMedia.

Its stations span major and mid-size markets, including several in Michigan, where the company runs outlets in Ann Arbor, Detroit, Flint, Grand Rapids, Muskegon, and Saginaw.

Among the notable stations in its portfolio are:

  • W4 Country 102.9

  • WJR 760 AM

  • Hot FM 105.3

  • WIOG 102.5

Together, these stations form a sprawling network that still reaches millions of listeners each week.

Leadership Promises Business as Usual

Despite the bankruptcy filing, company executives insist listeners and employees should see little disruption.

The prepackaged process is intended to address the company’s debt efficiently with no disruption to our operations, our people, and our strategies,” said Mary Berner, chief executive of Cumulus Media, in a statement released Thursday.

Prepackaged bankruptcies — where restructuring plans are negotiated with creditors before filing — are designed to accelerate court approval and minimize operational impact.

A Familiar Chapter in Cumulus’ Financial Story

The bankruptcy marks the second time the broadcaster has sought court protection in recent years.

Cumulus previously filed for bankruptcy in 2017, emerging later after a major restructuring effort.

More recently, financial reports show the company recorded a net loss of $65.6 million during the nine months leading up to Sept. 30, 2025, underscoring the mounting financial strain facing traditional broadcasters.

Now, as the company attempts another turnaround, the outcome of the restructuring could determine whether one of America’s largest radio networks can adapt — or whether the digital tide will continue to reshape the airwaves.
