A Russian couple known for their daring stunts has once again captured the world's attention, scaling the iconic Empire State Building's 1,454-foot-tall antenna in New York City and unfurling a banner that appeared to double as a marriage proposal.

Ivan Beerkus, 32, and Angela Nikolau, 33, reached the top of the landmark on July 1, displaying a black banner that read: “When the power of love beats the love of power the world knows peace.” They were arrested upon descent around 12:30 p.m. after police shut down streets in the area.

The pair now faces multiple felony charges, including reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, burglary, and BASE jumping. They were released from custody under supervision following a court appearance on July 2, with their next court date set for August 24.

This latest high-risk feat by the social media influencers highlights the ongoing tension between thrill-seeking adventurers and public safety in one of the world's most famous cities. Prosecutors described the couple as known for risky behaviors like breaking and entering and climbing buildings, and noted they had trespassed overnight before making the ascent.

The stunt required bypassing multiple secured areas, including breaking a $2,000 lock on a security door on the 104th floor. Police had to shut down the antenna’s high-frequency radio signals — powerful enough to harm the human body — before approaching the pair.

While the couple’s bold display of love and adventure has drawn both admiration and criticism, it also raises serious questions about the adequacy of security at iconic landmarks and the potential dangers such stunts pose to first responders and the public.

For now, the couple walks free under supervision, but the legal consequences of their Empire State Building climb could be significant as the case moves forward.
