Dayton Webber charged with murder

A story once defined by resilience and triumph has taken a dark and shocking turn, as Dayton Webber charged with murder now dominates headlines following a fatal shooting inside a moving vehicle in Maryland.

Authorities say Webber—once celebrated for defying extraordinary odds—now faces allegations that have stunned both the sports world and his local community.

Fatal Argument Ends in Gunfire

According to investigators from the Charles County Sheriff's Office, the incident unfolded around 10:25 p.m. Sunday night in suburban Baltimore.

Webber, 27, was driving with Bradrick Wells seated beside him when an argument erupted in front of other passengers inside the vehicle.

What began as a heated exchange escalated into tragedy. Authorities allege Webber shot Wells, also 27, during the dispute.

Investigators say Webber then pulled over in the community of La Plata and asked others in the car to help remove the victim’s body. They refused, fled the scene, and Webber allegedly drove away with Wells’ body still inside the vehicle.

Witnesses Alert Police, Search Intensifies

Two individuals who reportedly witnessed the killing flagged down officers on patrol, triggering an urgent manhunt.

Hours later, a resident in nearby Charlotte Hall reported discovering a body in a yard. Authorities confirmed it was Wells.

A warrant was quickly issued for Webber’s arrest as investigators pieced together the sequence of events.

Arrest Made Across State Lines

The search stretched beyond Maryland. Authorities located Webber’s vehicle in Charlottesville—about 150 miles from where the body was found.

Police tracked him to a nearby hospital, where he had reportedly sought treatment for an unspecified medical issue.

Officers from the Albemarle County Police Department arrested Webber as a fugitive upon his discharge.

He now faces charges including murder, assault, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, pending transfer back to Maryland custody.

Details Emerge From Charging Documents

A statement of charges cited by local media alleges Webber shot Wells twice in the head. Investigators noted that all individuals involved knew one another through work, though no clear motive has been disclosed.

Authorities also have not explained how Webber allegedly fired a weapon while driving. Officials said a search warrant for the vehicle had not yet been executed at the time of the report.

From Inspiration to Infamy

Webber’s arrest has drawn national attention, in part because of his remarkable personal history.

He rose to prominence after becoming the first quadruple amputee to compete professionally in the American Cornhole League, gaining recognition through coverage by ESPN.

As an infant, Webber survived a severe bacterial infection that led to the amputation of his legs and lower arms. Once given last rites, he went on to defy expectations—excelling in sports including wrestling and football before focusing on cornhole.

In 2023, he reflected on his journey in an essay for NBC’s Today, describing a comeback victory in state finals as one of his proudest achievements.

“I knew I could make it as a pro,” he wrote. “It felt amazing to go from underdog to winner.”

He later signed a professional contract and achieved multiple tournament wins, even earning a spot on SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays with a series of precision shots.

A Community Left Searching for Answers

The transformation from celebrated athlete to murder suspect has left many grappling with disbelief—like a lightning strike on a clear day.

A relative of Wells declined to comment, while investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

As the case unfolds, authorities are working to answer lingering questions about motive, sequence, and the final moments that led to a life lost—and another irrevocably changed.
