A violent ambush in the nation’s capital has triggered alarm after a US Park Police officer shot in DC during an undercover operation late Monday night, sending shockwaves through the community and law enforcement agencies.

The shooting unfolded in Southeast Washington, D.C., near the Maryland border, where authorities say the officer was targeted in what appears to be a deliberate attack.

Officer Injured, Then Released Hours Later

According to the United States Park Police, the officer was struck in the upper body and airlifted by helicopter to a hospital. Early reports from the D.C. Police Union described the injuries as critical.

But in a dramatic turn, officials later confirmed the officer is expected to make a full recovery and was released from the hospital Tuesday morning—an outcome that seemed uncertain in the immediate aftermath.

Undercover Operation Turns Into Targeted Attack

Interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll said investigators believe the gunmen intentionally targeted the officer, despite the fact he was working undercover.

The officer had been driving an unmarked white Tesla along Queens Stroll Place around 7:30 p.m. when two assailants approached and opened fire.

Even after being hit, the officer managed to drive several blocks away—an act of survival that officials say likely saved his life.

Authorities have not disclosed details about the undercover assignment, declining to clarify why a Park Police officer was operating in such a capacity or how common such assignments are.

Suspects Still at Large as Surveillance Footage Emerges

The two gunmen remain on the run, with investigators combing through evidence and searching for leads.

Officials confirmed that nearby surveillance cameras captured images of the suspects, though the footage has not yet been released publicly. Police say they are still determining when and how to share those images.

Federal Agencies Join Expanding Investigation

The case has drawn national attention, prompting involvement from top federal officials. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said she had been briefed on the situation and pledged support from federal agencies, including the U.S. Marshals Service.

“Please pray for the officer’s recovery,” Bondi said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Kash Patel confirmed that the Federal Bureau of Investigation is assisting in the probe, vowing to bring those responsible to justice.

Residents Rattled by Another Violent Incident

For neighbors, the sound of gunfire was all too familiar—and deeply unsettling.

“It was really terrifying. I’m still shaking,” said resident Wanda Mattia.

Another resident, Penny Williams, described a daily routine shaped by fear: entering and leaving home with the hope of staying safe. “It’s unnecessary,” she said, urging authorities to capture the suspects.

A Pattern of Violence Raises Concern

The shooting comes just months after a deadly November incident in the District, when two National Guard members were shot while patrolling near Farragut Square. One of them did not survive.

Like echoes of a recurring storm, Monday’s attack has reignited concerns about safety in the capital—leaving both residents and officials searching for answers as the investigation continues.
