Thomas Markle

CEBU, Philippines — Thomas Markle, the retired Hollywood lighting director and father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, is the subject of a criminal investigation in the Philippines. Authorities claim suspected child sexual abuse material was found at his former residence in Cebu.

Markle has denied possessing the material, describing the allegations as “sick lies,” while investigators conduct forensic examinations to determine what the recovered digital evidence contains.

Philippine authorities confirmed the investigation on Oct. 23, 2026. Nicholas Ty, a Philippine justice undersecretary, told Reuters that the country's anti-trafficking and online child sexual abuse and exploitation task force in Cebu was investigating the matter.

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla subsequently said police had found suspected material and a laptop at Markle's former home. Officials said forensic analysis was needed before investigators could reach definitive conclusions.

The material was reportedly discovered by Markle's son, Thomas Markle Jr., who contacted Philippine authorities. Reports also said he contacted the FBI. The bureau has acknowledged awareness of the allegations and said it would support Philippine authorities as appropriate and investigate any potential violations of U.S. federal law.

Markle, 82, has denied the allegations. No criminal conviction has been reported, and the investigation's findings have not been established in court.

Who is Thomas Markle?

Born in Pennsylvania in 1944, Thomas Wayne Markle built a decadeslong career behind the scenes in American television. He worked as a lighting director and director of photography, professions responsible for the lighting, visual presentation and technical execution of television productions.

His credits included the daytime drama “General Hospital” and the sitcom “Married ... With Children.” He also worked in Chicago television and received industry recognition for his technical contributions. He was awarded a Chicago/Midwest Emmy Award and two Daytime Emmy Awards associated with his work on “General Hospital.”

His career placed him within the production industry long before his daughter's marriage brought the family into international headlines.

Markle has three children: Samantha Markle, Thomas Markle Jr. and Meghan Markle, whose mother is Doria Ragland. Meghan became internationally known as an actor on the legal drama “Suits” before marrying Prince Harry, the younger son of King Charles III, in May 2018.

How the estrangement began

The breakdown in the relationship between Meghan and her father became public in the weeks before her wedding to Harry.

Markle initially was expected to walk his daughter down the aisle at Windsor Castle. However, he withdrew from the ceremony after acknowledging that he had arranged staged photographs with a paparazzi agency. He also reported suffering a heart attack and undergoing medical treatment that prevented him from traveling to Britain for the wedding. King Charles ultimately accompanied Meghan down the aisle for part of the ceremony.

The dispute deepened after the wedding as Markle gave interviews to newspapers and television programs about his daughter and her new family. Meghan and Harry expressed concern about media intrusion and repeatedly asked for privacy. The relationship deteriorated, and Markle did not attend the wedding or meet Harry in person at the time of the ceremony.

The estrangement has continued for years. Meghan and Harry have two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. Meghan has said her decision to keep her father away from the children was intended to protect them.

The latest allegations have renewed attention on the family's history. Meghan said in an Oct. 23 statement that she was deeply distressed by the reports and that her thoughts were with any children who may have been harmed. She said she had been informed about troubling allegations involving her father several years ago and had been assured that authorities were investigating.

The legal disputes surrounding the family

The family dispute has also intersected with high-profile litigation involving the British press. In 2019, Meghan sued Associated Newspapers, the publisher of The Mail on Sunday and MailOnline, over the publication of excerpts from a private letter she sent to her father. The lawsuit alleged misuse of private information, copyright infringement and violations of data protection law.

Meghan won the principal privacy claim in 2021, and the publisher's appeal was rejected in 2022. The case became an important legal dispute over privacy, copyright and the publication of private correspondence by newspapers.

The litigation was not a criminal case against Thomas Markle, nor did it determine whether the allegations now under investigation in the Philippines are true. It instead concerned the newspaper's publication of the letter and the legal rights associated with private communications.

British police have also confirmed that they are reviewing how a letter containing earlier allegations involving Markle was handled in 2019. The Metropolitan Police said the letter was reviewed and passed to the office of Harry and Meghan for their awareness, while the force considers whether further independent scrutiny of its handling is necessary.

How long has Markle lived in the Philippines?

Markle moved to Cebu after leaving Mexico in early 2025, according to published reports. He lived in the Philippines for more than a year before reportedly returning to the United States in 2026 for medical treatment. Authorities are now examining evidence reportedly left at his former residence.

The investigation has drawn attention to the challenges of cross-border criminal inquiries involving digital material. Philippine authorities may need assistance from U.S. and British agencies to establish the origin of the material, determine who had access to the devices and assess whether any laws were violated.

For now, the allegations remain under investigation. The case has renewed scrutiny of a family estrangement that has played out in public since 2018, while underscoring the distinction between an official investigation and proof of criminal wrongdoing. Investigators have said forensic analysis and further inquiries will be necessary before they can determine what, if any, charges may be appropriate.

Editorial note: These allegations remain under investigation. The material has not been conclusively verified and Thomas Markle has not been found guilty of anything. Authorities must establish those facts through verified forensic findings and the appropriate legal process.
