Gas Hits $4.28 a Gallon as Iran War Drags On: Trump Says US Is "Making a Fortune" While Drivers Pay the Price Eight Days Before Midterms

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Eight days before Americans vote in the midterm elections, the price of filling up a gas tank has become one of the most potent issues in the country. The national average for a gallon of regular stood at $4.28 on October 25, according to AAA, as the war with Iran, now in its eighth month, continues to keep global oil markets on edge.

In Michigan, where President Donald Trump rallied on Sunday, the pain is sharper: gas averaged $4.83 a gallon, up from $2.91 before the war began, according to reporting from the rally in Port Huron.

How Americans Got Here

The United States and Israel launched the war on Iran on February 28, 2026. Trump initially said it would last four to six weeks. Nearly eight months later, it has not ended, and Qatari mediators were in Tehran this weekend even as Trump ruled out an immediate attack on Iran.

While the current national average remains below the all-time high set in 2022, the increase is felt in household budgets, from commuters to truckers to families planning holiday travel. Higher diesel costs also feed through to grocery and shipping prices, compounding concerns about the cost of living that polls consistently rank among voters' top worries.

Trump: "We're Making a Fortune"

At a campaign stop in Georgia, Trump said the United States is making a "fortune" from high global oil prices and promised that prices will come down once the war with Iran ends. At the Michigan rally he repeated the point, saying he has no regrets about the war and citing the threat of Iranian nuclear weapons. Iran denies seeking one. According to coverage of the rally, he also boasted that American oil companies are profiting from the conflict.

The message is a delicate one. The United States is a major oil and gas producer, so higher prices do generate revenue for domestic energy companies. But consumers at the pump are not sharing in those profits, and critics say the remarks sound out of touch to drivers paying far more than they did a year ago.

Defense Production Act Invoked

On Thursday, Trump said his administration would invoke the Defense Production Act to boost domestic gas and diesel production. The Cold War-era law gives the president broad authority to direct private industry in the name of national security, and it has been used in recent years for everything from medical supplies to critical minerals.

Energy analysts caution that production incentives and directives take time to translate into lower pump prices, since refinery capacity, crude supplies and global demand all play a role. Whether the announcement will lower prices before November 3 is doubtful, though it signals the administration views fuel costs as a political and economic priority.

A Political Pressure Point

The war and its cost are already shaping individual races. In Michigan, Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers, who is running against Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, has called for an end to the Iran war and criticized Trump's tariffs, even while appearing alongside the president on stage. A Marketing Resource Group survey found 35 percent of Michigan voters view Trump positively. Michigan is one of about seven toss-up Senate races as Republicans defend a 53-seat majority.

Democrats are leaning into the economic argument. Campaigning across Ohio, Michigan and elsewhere, they have contrasted the administration's promises with the reality at the pump. Republicans counter that Iran's nuclear ambitions had to be confronted and that relief is coming once the conflict ends.

What Drivers Can Expect

Several factors will determine where prices go next: the progress of mediation efforts involving Qatar, the security of shipping lanes and Gulf infrastructure, and the pace of domestic production. In the Middle East, a Houthi attack on October 10 closed Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport, which has only partially reopened, a reminder of how fragile the region remains. Israeli officials, meanwhile, are heading into parliamentary elections on Tuesday.

For families, the practical advice is familiar: compare prices, avoid unnecessary trips and watch for weekly changes in the AAA average, which is the benchmark most analysts follow. For politicians, the equation is simpler. With early voting underway in many states, the number on the gas station sign may be doing as much to shape the election as any speech.

The Bottom Line

At $4.28 nationally and well above $4.80 in some battleground states, gasoline is more than a line item in a household budget. It is a daily, visible measure of how Americans judge the war with Iran and the leaders managing it. The administration is betting that an end to the conflict and new production orders will bring relief. Voters will deliver their first verdict on November 3.
