Is Pete Hegseth Out? Trump Reportedly Asked Advisers Whether the Defense Secretary Should Stay as Democrats Prepare Subpoenas After Midterm Sweep

Will Hegseth Survive? Trump Weighs Defense Secretary's Future

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Barely a day after Republicans lost control of Congress, the political future of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is suddenly one of the hottest questions in Washington. According to CBS News' live coverage of the midterm fallout, President Donald Trump has asked advisers whether Hegseth should stay in the job, even as the president publicly insists he is not considering removing him.

The reports collide with a hard political reality: Democrats, who will control the House and, according to CBS projections, the Senate next year, have long signaled they intend to scrutinize the Pentagon chief once they hold subpoena power.

Trump Asked Advisers, Then Said He Is Not Considering Removal

CBS News reports that Trump has privately asked advisers whether Hegseth should remain at the Pentagon. Asked about it afterward, the president offered a public vote of confidence. “I think he's done a very good job,” Trump said of Hegseth, and he later said he was not considering removing him.

The White House echoed that line. Spokeswoman Anna Kelly said the president “has full confidence in Secretary Hegseth.”

In Washington, however, statements of full confidence are often read as the prelude to an exit rather than a guarantee against one. The fact that the question was posed to advisers at all, within hours of an electoral defeat that Vice President JD Vance attributed to the Iran war, has fueled speculation about whether the defense secretary could become the administration's first major casualty of the loss.

The War Is the Backdrop

Hegseth sits at the center of the Iran conflict that Vance blamed for the defeat. “The reason we lost is the war,” Vance wrote on X. Trump acknowledged it was “largely true” because the war pushed up gasoline prices.

The US-Israeli operation against Iran, code-named Epic Fury, began on February 28. According to Al Jazeera, citing reporting from The Hill, Central Command has drawn up plans for follow-up strikes if the White House authorizes them, and military planners have prepared several options for Hegseth. The same report says the US is moving a third carrier strike group, the USS Theodore Roosevelt, along with roughly 10,000 additional soldiers and the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, to the Middle East by the end of November.

That means the man whose future is now in question is also the official who must carry out, or advise against, the next phase of a war that voters just punished the president's party for waging.

Democrats Have Been Preparing for This

Democrats made no secret before the election that Hegseth was a likely target. Coverage in the run-up to the vote reported that Democrats on the Armed Services and Oversight panels planned to go after the defense secretary if they won the House, and that Rep. Robert Garcia and Rep. Jason Crow were among those talking about it.

With the House now flipping, CBS reports Democrats will gain subpoena power over the administration for Trump's final two years. Rep. Ted Lieu, speaking after the results, said Democrats would focus on affordability, and listed stopping the Iran war among his party's priorities. A Democratic House can call Hegseth to testify, demand documents on war planning and munitions, and hold public hearings that put the Pentagon's decisions under oath.

Republicans Are Not United Behind Him

The pressure is not only coming from across the aisle. Reporting in recent weeks has described Republican senators, including North Carolina's Thom Tillis, expressing a wish to see Hegseth removed before the end of the year. Tillis is leaving the Senate after this term, which frees him to say what colleagues may think privately.

The GOP is also entering a leadership transition. House Speaker Mike Johnson will not seek another term as Republican leader, and Rep. Steve Scalise is running for minority leader, according to CBS. Scalise warned colleagues in a letter that the result “was far worse than any of us expected.” Trump declined to weigh in on that race.

A party that has just lost both chambers, and is debating its own leadership and whether it should have gone to war, has less capacity to defend an embattled cabinet member than it did a week ago.

What Happens Next

Several scenarios are now on the table. Trump could keep Hegseth and absorb the oversight fight, a choice that would hand Democrats a high-profile target for two years. He could replace him quickly, before Democrats take the gavel in January, in an attempt to reset the Pentagon's leadership ahead of any renewed strikes on Iran. Or he could wait, leaving the question unresolved while the lame-duck Senate still has a Republican majority to confirm a successor.

The timing matters. A nominee confirmed by the current Senate would face a friendlier process than one who had to wait until the new Democratic majority is seated. That calculation alone may shape how quickly the president moves, if he moves at all.

What It Means for Americans

For service members and their families, the stakes are immediate. Thousands more troops are headed to the Gulf region this month, and leadership turmoil at the Pentagon during a possible escalation raises hard questions about continuity and planning. For taxpayers, any extended hearing fight in Congress over war costs and tactics will determine how much more money Washington commits to the conflict.

For now, the official line is unchanged. The president says Hegseth is doing a very good job, and the White House says it has full confidence. But in a week when a vice president publicly blamed the president's war for a historic defeat, few in Washington are assuming that anything is settled.
