Pentagon Tells Congress Iran War Has Cost at Least $47 Billion as Burning Tankers and Mines Choke the Strait of Hormuz

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Pentagon has told Congress that the U.S. war on Iran has now cost at least $47 billion, a figure that has climbed by more than $3 billion in a single month, according to a CENTCOM estimate reported Thursday. The disclosure landed on the same day Iranian officials said three oil tankers caught fire after striking sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz, sending an oil slick of more than 20 miles across the water and fouling beaches along the northern coast of the United Arab Emirates.

Taken together, the two developments show how quickly the financial and economic toll of the conflict is compounding, just days before Americans head to the polls in a midterm election in which the cost of living is already a dominant issue.

A $47 Billion Bill, and Still Rising

According to the Pentagon estimate delivered to lawmakers, the war has cost at least $47 billion so far. That is more than $3 billion higher than the figure reported a month ago, meaning the conflict is consuming money at a pace of roughly $100 million a day on average over that stretch. Roughly $29 billion of the total is attributed to replacing munitions, the missiles, interceptors and precision weapons expended in the campaign.

The munitions line is the most striking part of the number. About three of every five dollars spent so far has gone not to fuel or personnel but to refilling arsenals. Defense analysts have warned for years that American stockpiles of high-end interceptors and long-range munitions are thinner than the public assumes, and that replenishing them takes years of production capacity rather than a single budget cycle. The new estimate puts a dollar figure on that concern.

The figure is described as a floor, not a ceiling. The phrase "at least" signals that costs still being tallied, including long-term repairs, medical care and equipment wear, are not fully captured. Congress will ultimately have to decide whether to cover the spending through supplemental appropriations, reprogramming of existing defense funds, or additional borrowing.

Tankers Ablaze in the World's Most Important Oil Choke Point

The cost report arrived alongside alarming news from the Persian Gulf. Iranian officials said three oil tankers caught fire after striking sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway through which a significant share of the world's seaborne oil passes. Satellite images show an oil slick stretching more than 20 miles, and oil has washed up on beaches in the northern United Arab Emirates.

The environmental damage is immediate and visible, but the strategic implications may be larger. Mines in a shipping lane that narrow are a threat to every vessel that transits, regardless of flag. Even the perception of risk raises insurance premiums, delays cargoes and pushes energy prices upward, costs that are ultimately passed on to consumers at the gas pump and in the price of goods that depend on petroleum.

The cause of the mine strikes and responsibility for the mines have not been independently established in the reporting available so far, and readers should treat early accounts from any party in the conflict with caution.

A Diplomatic Opening: The Seven-Day Plan

There is one potentially hopeful thread. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says he is in contact with mediators about a proposed seven-day plan to reopen the strait. Details of the proposal have not been made public, and it is unclear whether Washington has endorsed it or what conditions would attach to it. But the fact that a time-limited reopening framework is being discussed at all suggests that both the economic pressure of a closed strait and the political pressure of the war's mounting costs are being felt in Tehran as well as in Washington.

Diplomatic proposals of this kind often hinge on sequencing: who moves first, who verifies, and how mines are cleared. A seven-day window would be short for the technical work of sweeping a shipping lane, which is slow and dangerous even in the best of circumstances. That gap between a political announcement and the physical reality of clearing mines is where many such plans have stumbled historically.

What It Means for American Families

For ordinary Americans, the abstract billions translate into concrete questions. First, who pays? A war financed by borrowing adds to the national debt and, over time, to interest costs that crowd out other spending. Second, what happens to energy prices? Hormuz disruptions have a long record of moving crude oil markets, and drivers are typically the first to notice. Third, what is the endgame? Lawmakers in both parties have pressed for clearer objectives, and a $47 billion price tag with no defined exit point sharpens those demands.

The timing also matters politically. With the midterm elections days away, candidates in competitive House and Senate races are being asked to account for a war whose costs are climbing and whose resolution is uncertain. In districts where voters say high prices are their main concern, the intersection of war spending and energy costs is likely to feature in closing arguments.

What to Watch Next

Several developments will shape the story in the coming days. Watch for whether the seven-day reopening plan is formally confirmed and what verification measures accompany it. Watch for official confirmation of how the tankers were damaged and what cleanup efforts are underway along the UAE coast. And watch for how Congress responds to the updated cost figure, including whether committee leaders call for hearings or press for a supplemental funding request.

The Pentagon's number is a snapshot, and every indication is that it will be higher the next time it is updated. Whether the strait reopens, and how fast, may determine whether the next update shows the costs leveling off or continuing their steady climb.
