Iran Rejects US Reply on Hormuz as Trump Calls Qeshm Island Strike "Minor" and Pentagon Reportedly Readies a Bigger Blow

TEHRAN / WASHINGTON — Iran says Washington's answer to its plan for reopening the Strait of Hormuz is "not convincing," even as President Donald Trump confirms American forces struck an Iranian anti-aircraft site and U.S. media report that military planners have a short, intense campaign ready to go.

The standoff, now in its latest and most dangerous phase, leaves the world's most important oil chokepoint closed, tankers burning, and negotiators in Qatar racing against a military clock.

Trump: A "Minor Attack" That "Wasn't War"

Trump told Fox News that U.S. forces hit an Iranian anti-aircraft facility early Tuesday, Nov. 3. He called it a "minor attack" that "wasn't war," adding of the facility: "They built an anti-aircraft facility. It took them about two months." Iranian media said the strikes landed on Qeshm Island in the Gulf, near the strait. U.S. officials described the action as defensive, taken after Iranian fire at an American aircraft. No casualty figures were reported.

Trump has struck a confident tone elsewhere. In a phone interview with the Financial Times he said, "We seem to be getting everything we want." Asked about the scale of any further action, he said, "I'm not looking to … kill lots of people," then added, "If we have to, we'll have to."

Iran's Seven Conditions

At the center of the indirect talks is an Iranian proposal to reopen the waterway over two days if the United States meets Tehran's seven demands, which include lifting sanctions and ending the U.S. naval blockade. Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, wrote on X that Washington's response "was not convincing" and that the U.S. must "fully and explicitly address Iran's seven conditions." Only then, he said, "will the Strait of Hormuz be reopened."

Iranian officials have also suggested that European countries and undersea Gulf cables could become targets if the conflict widens. Iran's supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has reportedly ordered the military to respond to any threat immediately and without geographic limits, and to update its target list.

Qatar Keeps the Channel Open

Qatar is the go-between. Foreign ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari said talks continue and that both sides "remain committed to the negotiation process," describing a "real-time exchange of proposals." That diplomacy is the only thing separating the current uneasy pause from a return to full-scale war.

Tankers, Mines and Drones

The danger at sea is already real. The UK Maritime Trade Operations center reported that two unidentified projectiles struck a tanker's engine room about 14 nautical miles northeast of Oman's Limah on Tuesday, with no casualties reported. On Wednesday, Iran's Revolutionary Guard claimed four oil tankers were destroyed after hitting naval mines in a prohibited lane south of the strait and said two more vessels were detained. Al Jazeera noted those claims could not be independently verified.

The Guard also claimed to have shot down a U.S.-made MQ-9 drone over the strait, which it described as its 56th.

A Bigger Strike Reportedly on the Table

U.S. media, citing officials, have reported that U.S. Central Command has plans for strikes that could begin as soon as the midterms were over, with three American aircraft carriers expected in the region. The reports describe a short, intense campaign. Trump himself said Friday that he may "have to" destroy more of Iran, saying "you'll know soon enough."

The prospect has drawn skepticism from foreign policy analysts. Political scientist John Mearsheimer asked, "If the 40-day bombing campaign didn't work, how is the three-day bombing campaign going to work?" He warned that Iranian retaliation could drag the U.S. into a longer war.

What It Means for Americans

The costs are landing at home. The Pentagon has told Congress the war has cost at least $47 billion, gas prices have climbed above $4 a gallon, and voters just delivered Republicans a midterm rebuke that Iran's own officials have pointed to as evidence that Americans oppose the war. With Democrats set to take over Congress in January, war powers, funding and oversight fights are coming.

In the meantime, the question is whether Qatar's mediation can produce a deal on the seven conditions before the next strike. With a closed strait, a rising death toll among merchant sailors and a president openly weighing escalation, the margin for error is thin.
