According to the prosecution, the exclusive Pacific Palisades neighborhood was the perfect target for a man who viewed corporate overseers as a force of evil.

The government alleges that on the night of New Year’s Eve 2025, Rinderknecht traveled to a remote, deserted area near the Summit neighborhood and ignited a brush fire. While firefighters initially arrived at the scene and believed they had extinguished what was then known as the Lachman Fire, the prosecution claims the blaze did not truly die. Instead, it smoldered underground within the root systems of the local brush and trees for six days.

When strong Santa Ana winds picked up on January 7, 2025, that hidden ember exploded into a firestorm of historic proportions. The resulting Palisades Fire scorched over 23,000 acres, destroyed approximately 6,800 structures, and claimed the lives of 12 people.
