Deadly Winter Storm Knocks Out Power for Hundreds of Thousands as Ice and Snow Paralyze U.S. Regions

A powerful winter storm sweeping across the United States has left hundreds of thousands of customers without electricity, disrupted travel nationwide, and claimed at least 19 lives, according to confirmed reports from multiple states.

The sprawling storm system, which brought a dangerous mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain, and extreme cold, impacted more than half of the U.S. population at its peak. Forecasters warned that recovery efforts may take days as frigid temperatures slow ice melt and worsen already hazardous conditions.

Power outages remained widespread Monday night across Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, and parts of the Northeast, with more than 500,000 customers still in the dark. Emergency officials cautioned residents to stay off roads where possible, as refreezing ice continues to make travel treacherous.

Fatalities and Emergency Declarations

Authorities confirmed storm-related deaths in Pennsylvania, Texas, Louisiana, Tennessee, Kansas, Mississippi, New York City, and New York state, with causes ranging from traffic accidents to exposure and snow-clearing incidents.

President Donald Trump approved emergency disaster declarations for more than a dozen states, while the Federal Emergency Management Agency pre-positioned rescue teams, generators, and supplies in anticipation of prolonged outages and dangerous cold.

Northeast Buried Under Heavy Snow

The storm intensified as it moved into the Northeast, dumping more than 20 inches of snow in parts of Massachusetts and leaving Boston with nearly a foot and a half. Schools across the region closed, and city governments declared emergencies to speed snow removal and request outside assistance.

New York City recorded over 11 inches of snow in Central Park, setting a daily record. Philadelphia saw its heaviest snowfall in nearly a decade, while Pittsburgh struggled to keep roads clear as nearly half of its snowplow fleet required repairs.

South Struggles With Ice and Extreme Cold

Before heading north, the storm pummeled the South with a rare and destructive ice event. In Texas and Louisiana, ice-coated trees collapsed under the weight, tearing down power lines and blocking roads. Entire neighborhoods were left inaccessible as crews worked around the clock to clear debris.

In Mississippi and Georgia, officials warned residents that refreezing conditions would make even cleared roads unsafe. Some areas experienced ice accumulation not seen since the mid-1990s.

Temperatures plunged well below normal, with wind chills in parts of the Midwest dropping to minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit, creating life-threatening conditions for anyone exposed outdoors for extended periods.

Travel Disruptions and Community Impact

The storm forced mass flight cancellations, shuttered schools and universities across multiple states, and prompted churches and entertainment venues to cancel or move events online. Mardi Gras parades in parts of Louisiana were postponed as officials prioritized safety.

Emergency responders reported being overwhelmed by calls related to stranded motorists, fallen trees, and cold exposure. Many residents reported hearing trees snapping throughout the night as ice continued to accumulate.

Meteorologists warned that the combination of widespread damage and incoming extreme cold makes this storm particularly dangerous, noting that recovery will be slow in areas hit hardest by ice.
