Delta Airlines

There is a piece of terrific news for all wheel-chair users: you won’t need to think twice before boarding a plane as Delta Airlines' new wheelchair seats are near confirmation. We understand the struggle you undergo when the flight attendant requests you to shift from your comfort zone to sit in the airplane’s seat; therefore, Delta Airlines is making every possible effort that their latest seats get approval and passengers in wheelchairs don’t face more trouble.

Not only the main airline company but also the Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the project of wheelchair seats is in progress. Thus, these passengers will be able to enjoy their air travel while sitting in their tailored seats.

Sophie Morgan’s Reaction To Delta Airlines New Wheelchair Seats

Sophie Morgan, the founder of the campaign named Rights on Flights reacted to Delta Airlines' new wheelchair seats in an exciting manner saying that she is thrilled to hear the news as finally, the moment has arrived that we had been anticipating. Delta Airlines has made the first step on a long journey towards the new destination of change. With this new seat concept, we expect a similar advancement from other airlines as well to make traveling safer and smoother for all wheelchair users.

Morgan expressed her delight by adding that the airlines had done an impressive job implementing this initiative and had provided a good reason for disability supporters to book their next flight with Delta Airlines.

Do US Airlines Handle Wheelchairs Properly?

Unfortunately, US airlines have a rather disappointing track record of handling wheelchairs properly. According to recent statistics from the Department of Transportation, the airlines in the U.S. destroy or damage around 10,000-15,000 wheelchairs with other devices that assist in mobility. That is one alarming misconduct from airline staff, who do not show professionalism while handling wheelchairs.

Hearing about Delta Airlines' latest news spread joy among wheelchair advocates. They said that by introducing these new seats, the airlines have made traveling seamless for those passengers.

What Did The CEO Of All Wheels Up Say Regarding Delta Airlines New Wheelchair Seats?

Michelle Erwin is the CEO of All Wheels Up. It is another group that supports the traveling of disabled travelers. He expressed his emotions by saying that they had been working on the wheelchair seats concept for more than 15 years, and we're now witnessing it near confirmation. It is like a breath of relief that these individuals will also get to fly like normal passengers. Erwin further thanked several stakeholders, such as Paralyzed Veterans of America and the National Institute for Aviation Research, for accepting their idea and moving alongside. If they had not received their support, they would have reached this point where things are this close to fruition.  However, there is still work to be done that will answer the question of when will everyone finally see wheelchair users fly in their seats.

What Are The Updates From DOT?

Where everyone is going gaga over the news of Delta Airlines' new wheelchair seats close to confirmation. The Department of Transportation has shared a few updates regarding inclusivity. They said that the wheelchair concept chairs are a promised decision and are already going through the process of seeking approvals from the concerned authorities.

Sean Manning, the spokesperson for DOT, said that under the supervision and directions of Secretary Buttigieg, the FAA has been doing their job of organizing and supporting research related to the installment of wheelchair restraint systems to allow these individuals to fly in their comfort zone within the aircraft’s cabin. The good news is that the FAA has not yet identified any major issues that could pose a barrier to the wheelchair’s installation. With this, they are also working on solutions that can assist in reducing any sort of minor issues so that these special passengers get no chance to complain at all. The body is expected to determine the practicality of wheelchairs in the airplane by the end of 2025.

Will Wheelchair Users Be Able To Fly Next Year?

We understand your excitement regarding Delta Airlines' new wheelchair seats, which will be ready by the end of next year. But hang on—these seats will still not be ready to use unless and until the FAA and DOT provide everyone, especially the wheelchair users, with technical information that the new seats are feasible. The airlines will take their time to complete the installation of the new wheelchair seats and also get the accommodation approved on an individual basis from the concerned regulators.

Moreover, the DOT is planning to make it a requirement for the airlines that after they get approval, they must move ahead to install the necessary equipment. But that will be a separate procedure.

What More Does The Dot Have In Their Pipeline?

DOT’s spokesperson Manning revealed that the agency has a lot more in its pipeline. As per the requirement of the FAA Reauthorization Act, 2024, they will also conduct a study. Here, they plan to analyze the financial and economic practicality of the airlines. The results will prove to be a confirmation of whether other airlines can accommodate wheelchair passengers in the main cabin in the air or not. Based on the findings, DOT can only make release rules for passengers to allow them to remain in their wheelchairs.

When Did Delta Airline Display Their Wheelchair Seat Design?

Delta Airlines displayed the early concept of wheelchair seats as part of Delta Flight Products at the Aircraft Cabin Interiors Expo, which took place in Hamburg in 2023. In 2024, the airline shared the updated version in the same place. A spokesperson from the airline said that it is confirmed that Delta Airlines has requested approval to start installing the seats once the FAA finishes its technical testing.

Conclusion

It’s good to see that Delta Airlines is taking inclusivity in the air as well and once they get approval, all the wheelchair users will love traveling in Delta Airlines new wheelchair seats and get another reason to fly with them.
