DEVELOPING STORY

  • A celebration turned chaotic after a vehicle drove into a crowded New Year parade in Louisiana.
  • Authorities report multiple serious injuries as emergency responders rushed victims to hospitals by ground and air.
  • Early findings suggest impairment, not intent, but the investigation remains ongoing.

[LOUISIANA] - A festive celebration in Louisiana turned into a scene of chaos and urgency after a driver plowed into a crowded Lao New Year parade in New Iberia, leaving at least 15 people injured and sending shockwaves through the local community as authorities moved quickly to secure the scene and provide emergency medical care.

The incident unfolded Saturday afternoon at the intersection of Savannakhet Street and Melancon Road, where families and attendees had gathered to celebrate the Buddhist New Year when a vehicle struck multiple pedestrians in what witnesses described as a sudden and terrifying moment. Video circulating on social media shows injured individuals lying along the roadway as bystanders and first responders rushed in to provide aid, underscoring the speed at which the situation escalated.

Officials with the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the driver has been taken into custody, though the individual’s identity has not yet been released. According to preliminary findings, authorities believe the driver was inebriated at the time of the incident and have indicated that, at this stage, there is no evidence to suggest the act was intentional. Even so, the severity of the injuries and the circumstances surrounding the crash have prompted a full investigation as law enforcement works to piece together exactly what happened in the moments leading up to the impact.

Emergency response efforts were immediate and extensive. Acadian Ambulance reported that at least 11 patients were transported by ground to nearby medical facilities, while two others required air transport due to the seriousness of their injuries. Officials have indicated that several victims remain in serious condition, though the total number of injured may reach as high as 20 as assessments continue.

The parade, which was part of a Lao New Year celebration, had drawn a large and diverse crowd, reflecting the cultural significance of the event within the community. What began as a day of celebration quickly shifted into a coordinated emergency response, with law enforcement, medical personnel, and local officials converging on the scene to manage both the aftermath and the safety of those still present.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry issued a statement expressing concern and support for those affected, noting that he and his wife were praying for the victims and expressing gratitude for the first responders who acted swiftly in the immediate aftermath. The response from emergency crews has been widely described as rapid and coordinated, likely preventing even more serious outcomes.

As the investigation continues, authorities are expected to examine factors including impairment, vehicle operation, and any potential contributing conditions that may have led to the incident. Legal consequences for the driver could be significant, particularly if intoxication is confirmed as a contributing factor in a crash involving multiple injuries.

For now, the focus remains on the victims and their recovery, as a community that gathered to celebrate finds itself grappling with the aftermath of a sudden and deeply unsettling event.
