Disneyland Resort is tightening its grip on visitor behavior, rolling out a stricter “guest code of conduct” as ride disruptions climb beyond historical norms.

The move comes after officials revealed that guest actions were responsible for 13% of ride shutdowns in fiscal year 2025 — a notable jump from the typical 10% average. Like a finely tuned machine thrown off by a single loose bolt, even small infractions have increasingly triggered system-wide interruptions across the park’s high-tech attractions.

“Stow It, Don’t Show It” Rule Takes Center Stage

At the heart of the crackdown is a new phone policy dubbed “Stow it, Don’t Show it.” Visitors are now required to fully secure their phones before boarding certain rides. Cast members are conducting visual checks and will delay ride dispatch if devices are visible.

Handheld filming is no longer allowed on high-motion rides such as Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway and the Incredicoaster. Officials say unsecured phones can fall, interfere with sensors, or force emergency stops — turning moments of excitement into operational headaches.

Loose Items and Risky Behavior Under Scrutiny

The restrictions extend beyond phones. Oversized drink containers — including popular insulated tumblers — are now discouraged due to safety and storage concerns. Officials warn that “loose articles,” from hats to backpacks, can disrupt ride systems if they shift or fall mid-ride.

Problematic behavior is also under the microscope. Standing during rides or extending arms beyond safety restraints has become increasingly common, prompting stricter enforcement.

Security Tightens at Park Entry

The crackdown doesn’t stop at rides. Entry protocols are also evolving, with enhanced bag checks and expanded bans on items like selfie sticks, telescoping devices, and gimbals. Security personnel are now more likely to deny entry outright rather than issue warnings.

In a major technological shift, Disneyland has introduced facial recognition entry gates, replacing its long-standing photo verification system. The system converts a guest’s face into a biometric signature to streamline entry and prevent fraud, though visitors can opt out via manual lanes.

Balancing Safety and Guest Experience

Disneyland officials maintain that the changes are designed to improve safety and reliability across increasingly complex attractions. But reactions among visitors have been mixed, with some questioning the irony of limiting phone use in a park that heavily relies on mobile apps for navigation and services.

Still, as rides grow more advanced and sensitive, the margin for error narrows. In this high-stakes balancing act, Disneyland appears determined to ensure that the magic runs smoothly — even if it means asking guests to keep their phones tucked away.
