A 55-year-old Syracuse man is facing multiple attempted murder charges after allegedly stabbing a dog with a machete and then opening fire on police, triggering a more than four-hour standoff that left two officers shot and a third injured.

The chaotic incident unfolded Saturday in a residential neighborhood just south of downtown Syracuse. Authorities say Rodney Vanderpool first drew police attention around 6 a.m. when he was reported stabbing a dog with a machete. Officers located the injured animal and arranged emergency veterinary care.

While executing a search warrant, Vanderpool allegedly began firing at responding officers, striking two Syracuse police officers and injuring a third.

Prolonged and Dangerous Standoff

For more than four hours, Vanderpool continued actively shooting at law enforcement as negotiators tried to peacefully resolve the situation. The Syracuse Police Department’s Emergency Response Team, along with the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, FBI, ATF, and other agencies, responded to the scene. Nearby residents were evacuated by bus for their safety.

The standoff finally ended around 3:15 p.m. when Vanderpool exited the apartment and was taken into custody without further incident.

Vanderpool faces serious charges including three counts of first-degree attempted murder, second-degree attempted assault, menacing, criminal possession of a weapon, and aggravated cruelty to animals. The two wounded officers and the third injured officer are all in stable condition and remain hospitalized with their families by their side.

This disturbing incident began as a call about animal cruelty but rapidly escalated into a violent and prolonged confrontation with police. The fact that one man was able to hold off multiple law enforcement agencies for over four hours while actively firing on officers raises serious questions about the situation inside the residence and how it unfolded.

Both Syracuse Police Chief Mark Rusin and Mayor Sharon Owens praised the bravery of the responding officers and the coordinated effort by multiple agencies, calling it a model response to a highly dangerous scenario.

Thankfully, all three injured officers are expected to recover. However, the case serves as another sobering reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face every single day — sometimes even on what starts as a seemingly routine call involving animal cruelty.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to piece together the full sequence of events.
