Domestic Violence Deaths Remain High as Family Killings Surge Across the U.S.

Domestic Violence continues to claim lives across the United States at an alarming rate. The overall homicide numbers are declining. But domestic violence deaths are higher than ever.

In the first two days of June alone, authorities reported three separate family massacres in Iowa, New York, and Florida, leaving 13 people dead. This includes children as young as three years old.

Experts, advocates, and survivors say these tragedies highlight a growing crisis that demands urgent attention.

Recent incidents have renewed concerns about the nation's ability to prevent domestic violence-related homicides, particularly those involving firearms and family annihilations.

A Disturbing Trend in Domestic Violence Emerges

Law enforcement officials described the recent killings as acts of unimaginable evil. However, domestic violence prevention advocates argue that many of these deaths were preventable.

According to data cited by researchers at Northeastern University, family massacres involving four or more relatives have increased significantly in 2026 after reaching a 20-year low in previous years. While overall homicide rates have steadily fallen since the pandemic-era crime spike, domestic violence deaths have remained persistently high.

Federal crime data shows that attacks resulting in the deaths of multiple family members or intimate partners peaked in 2022. Although the number declined slightly in subsequent years, it remained substantially above pre-2020 levels.

From 2017 through 2025, more than 3,000 people lost their lives in incidents involving multiple family members or intimate partners. Family and partner killings now account for approximately 21 percent of all homicides, compared to 15 percent in 2020.

One Family's Tragic Domestic Violence Story

Psychologist Doreen Dodgen-Magee has spent decades raising awareness about domestic violence after experiencing a devastating personal loss.

Her sister and three young nieces were murdered by her brother-in-law after years of escalating abuse and controlling behavior. According to Dodgen-Magee, warning signs had been visible long before the killings occurred.

The victim, Laura Whitson, had obtained a restraining order and fled with her daughters to her mother's home in Oregon. Despite those efforts, her estranged husband allegedly purchased a firearm and carried out the murders shortly afterward.

Only the children's grandmother survived.

Dodgen-Magee believes that communities, faith organizations, and family members must take warning signs more seriously.

"We are at a time of exhaustion," she said, emphasizing that people often distance themselves from stories of domestic violence instead of recognizing how common the danger can be.

The Role of Firearms in Domestic Violence Deaths

Experts note that firearms are involved in the overwhelming majority of family annihilation cases.

In response to growing concerns, former President Joe Biden signed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act in 2022, one of the most significant federal gun safety measures enacted in decades. Information about the law can be found through the U.S. Department of Justice at https://www.justice.gov.

The legislation expanded background checks and closed what had been known as the "boyfriend loophole," preventing individuals convicted of domestic violence against dating partners from legally possessing firearms.

Advocates, however, argue that additional protections are needed.

Many support so-called "extreme risk protection order" laws, sometimes referred to as red flag laws, which allow courts to temporarily remove firearms from individuals deemed a threat to themselves or others.

Currently, 22 states and Washington, D.C., have adopted some form of these laws.

Supporters argue they can prevent impulsive acts of violence, while critics contend they raise concerns about due process and Second Amendment rights.

Understanding the Motives Behind Family Killings

Researchers say family massacres often stem from a combination of domestic abuse, control, entitlement, and mental health struggles.

James Alan Fox, a criminology professor at Northeastern University, explained that perpetrators frequently lash out when a spouse attempts to leave a relationship.

In some cases, children become targets because abusers view harming them as another way to inflict pain on their partner.

Other incidents involve perpetrators experiencing financial hardship, unemployment, or perceived loss of status. Experts say some offenders develop distorted beliefs that killing family members somehow protects them from future suffering.

Still, some killings appear to result from sudden rage triggered by domestic disputes.

Recent Domestic Violence Tragedies Shock Communities

Several recent cases have drawn national attention.

In Muscatine, Iowa, authorities said Ryan Willis McFarland allegedly killed six family members, including his wife and daughter, before taking his own life following what investigators described as a domestic dispute.

In Upstate New York, police say Saleh Mohamed fatally shot his wife and two young sons, ages three and four. Investigators have not publicly disclosed a motive.

Meanwhile, in Doral, Florida, authorities discovered the bodies of a woman and her two daughters after police say Ryan Charles Whiten killed them before dying by suicide.

Each case has left devastated communities searching for answers.

Calls for Better Mental Health Support

Advocates emphasize that preventing domestic violence requires more than gun legislation alone.

Jacquelyn Campbell of the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing supports secure firearm storage laws, arguing that even brief delays can prevent impulsive acts of violence.

Others believe greater access to mental health care could play a critical role.

Irma Denisse Rivera knows the devastating consequences firsthand. Her daughter was killed by an ex-boyfriend who also murdered three of her children before taking his own life in 2025.

Only Rivera's granddaughter survived.

According to Rivera, every news report involving domestic homicide reopens emotional wounds for the surviving child.

She believes that expanding access to affordable mental health treatment, crisis intervention services, and domestic violence prevention programs could help save lives.

Prevention Remains the Key

Experts agree that recognizing warning signs early remains one of the most effective ways to prevent domestic violence fatalities.

Warning signs can include:

  • Extreme jealousy and possessiveness
  • Threats of violence
  • Controlling behavior
  • Stalking or harassment
  • Escalating physical abuse
  • Access to firearms combined with emotional instability

Advocates urge friends, relatives, faith leaders, and community members to take these warning signs seriously and support victims seeking safety.

As family killings continue to make headlines across the country, survivors and prevention experts share a common message: domestic violence is not a private family matter. It is a public health crisis that requires coordinated action from lawmakers, communities, healthcare providers, and families alike.

For those experiencing abuse, confidential help is available through the National Domestic Violence Hotline by calling 800-799-SAFE (7233) or visiting https://www.thehotline.org.
