As gas prices remain high and environmental concerns continue to grow, many Americans are turning to Electric Vehicles (EVs) as an alternative to traditional gasoline-powered cars. 

A recent Gallup poll found that nearly half of U.S. consumers have either purchased (7%) or are considering purchasing (44%) an electric vehicle. Among the most popular options is Tesla. It is often compared to a gas-powered sedan like the Nissan Sentra.

Typical Tesla Charging Costs

The cost of charging a Tesla depends largely on the model and where you charge it. According to EnergySage, a full charge ranges from $10.95 to $17.99. The Tesla Model 3 is the most economical, while the Model X and Model S are on the higher end.

With an EPA-estimated range of 352 miles, the Model X will need charging about three times a month if you drive the U.S. average of 1,123 miles monthly. At about $17.99 per charge, that equals roughly $54 per month in charging costs. Meanwhile, the Model 3 costs about $33 per month to charge based on average electricity rates of $0.15 per kWh.

Tesla’s official website, data suggests the average charging cost per mile is 4.56 cents, much lower than the cost per mile for gasoline. However, NRG Clean Power notes that EVs lose up to 10% of energy per charge, and it’s best to keep them plugged in during long periods of nonuse.

Superchargers can cost between 24 and 48 cents per kWh, depending on the location and time of day. Installing an at-home charger—priced between $300 and $650 (plus installation)—can help reduce these long-term costs.

Typical Nissan Sentra Fuel Costs

According to Nissan’s official site, the 2025 Nissan Sentra offers between 30 and 40 miles per gallon (MPG), depending on the model. Based on a national average gas price of $3.188 (as of Sept. 12, 2025), driving 1,123 miles a month would consume about 33 gallons of fuel, costing approximately $105 per month.

Fuel costs vary significantly by region. Drivers on the West Coast and in Alaska pay much more, while those in the Southeast benefit from some of the lowest gas prices in the nation.

Comparing Overall Costs and Ownership

When comparing monthly energy costs alone, a Tesla could cost $33–$54 per month to charge, while a Nissan Sentra costs closer to $105 per month to refuel—an estimated savings of $51–$72 monthly.

However, the purchase price remains a major factor. The 2025 Nissan Sentra S FWD starts at $21,590, while the Tesla Model 3 begins at around $44,130, according to GOBankingRates.

Maintenance is another consideration. Teslas generally require less upkeep—no oil changes or transmission fluid replacements—due to fewer moving parts. As one EV analyst told GOBankingRates, “While EVs can cost more upfront, long-term savings on fuel and maintenance often make up for the difference.”

For drivers seeking long-term savings and environmental benefits, electric vehicles like Tesla offer a compelling advantage over traditional gas-powered sedans. Yet, the higher upfront cost and infrastructure considerations—like charging access—remain key decision points for potential buyers.

As the EV market expands and charging technology improves, the cost gap between electric and gas vehicles is likely to narrow even further.
